Almost forgot about this.
On Monday at about 12:30 I had an unusual encounter. I was walking up the hill to get some lunch when I saw a jogger running towards me about 20 meters away. You know the type, in spandex wearing a light jacket and toque jogging down icy sidewalks in -10 degree weather. Anyway as he jogs toward me, he slips on the ice sideways and falls. It didn’t look like a bad fall to me.
When I approached I noticed he was clutching his lower right leg. I asked him if he was ok, did he sprain anything? He said he might have broken something and asked if I could help him up. I did. He had a hard time putting weight on it so I told him to put his arm around me and I would walk him to a nearby pet store. I helped him hobble the 80 meters to the store. On the way I told him that he could use my cell to call for help. He said he could have just called from the corner. I told him that if he’s just going to stand around outside he would get cold pretty quick. Waiting inside is the better idea. He put up no argument.
After getting inside, I let him use my cell to call a coworker to come pick him up. I shook his hand, wished him a speedy recovery and made my leave.
I was glad to be able to help somebody out. It’s not every day that I get the opportunity. Though he was in pain, he seemed a tad standoffish I had to be matter of fact and rather insistent to help him. It’s almost as though he thought I might expect something in return, or perhaps it was just a sort of veneer of mistrust in the modern age. It could have easily been the pain though. Our attension tends to pull our consciousness inward when we are in pain whether it be physical or mental.
Regardless it was an interesting encounter that gave me a lot to ponder.
