Ashtanga, etc.

I'm starting an Ashtanga yoga practice for myself. I went to my mom's Ashtanga class when I was in Michigan, which is the second time I'd done it, and it's my favorite form of yoga I've done by far. The Hatha yoga I've done, I find somewhat boring. My brain is super active most of the time, and it generally doesn't shut up. Ashtanga makes it shut up--I spend the first twenty minutes or so of class thinking about how hard it is and how I'm not sure I can go for an hour and a half, and then my brain shuts up and I just do yoga. Ashtanga is awesome and challenging and aerobic, and I love it.

I've been to two classes so far since I got back to Asheville, and my second class this Sunday, I was already more flexible. I'm significantly less sore today than I was after last week's class. I love the emphasis on the breath in my class. My instructor is good and has suggestions on body mechanics for me when I ask her, but is less proactice on those sorts of corrections, so I think I'll specifically ask for them. Sadly, I'll miss this coming week's class because I'll be learning Five Element theory, but I bought myself an Ashtanga DVD so I can start working on my own practice at home. I'd like to do a full series twice a week--I could do once at my class, and pick another regular day to do it at home.

I'm very excited about this, and I think Ashtanga is something I'll be able to stick with. It's a good fit for now, and I think the time is going to work out well for me. Yay! Asheville's a grea yoga town. I'm also thinking of checking out the flow yoga class this Friday since I can't make Ashtanga, especially since one of the things I love about it is the vinyasas between poses, and I know flow involves that as well and I've never tried flow.

This semester is going to be hard. We've got three quizzes every week, more some weeks. No more easy classes for me!

I haven't had a good night's sleep in over a month now. I keep waking up stupid early and not getting back to sleep in any meaningful way. It's taking its toll, though I'm doing remarkably well with it considering. I don't know what to do for myself. I'm definitely working on getting more exercise, I've tried a number of herbal things. It's a problem. Blood deficiency, perhaps? Whatever it is, I'm ready for good sleep now, please.

Looking at earlier LJ entries, it appears I had this problem at this time last year as well. Huh.
