I saw "The Da Vinci Code" last night. It was very mediocre. First of all, I enjoyed the book. Well written? Not really. However, it had two redeeming qualities: tons of interesting historical information, and suspense. It made a good thriller. The movie? It leaves out most of the historical stuff, and really wasn't so much with the suspense, either (and not just because I already knew what happens).
The movie was very poorly cast. Teabing was the only good casting decision; none of the rest of them worked at all. Sophie's character got whittled down to a brooding girl trying to deal with the information, not someone who can be hard-headed herself, and the actress delivered the lines really melodramatically. Everything was very choppy, everyone looked wrong for their parts, lots of stuff left out, etc. Very poorly done. If you haven't seen it, wait for it on DVD.
In other media, I'm reading an amazingly written novel called The Book of Salt by Monique Truong. Its main character is a Vietnamese chef in France, and the descriptions of food (and everything else) are amazing, so lucious and sensuously written. It's a wonderful book, and I highly recommend it.
