So, I've realized I've been spoiled by
shoebox_project. It is the story of teenaged Sirius and Remus, (and they are in love) and it is possibly one of the most delightful, charming, witty and amazing writing styles I have come across in my many years of fanfiction-reading.
Basically, it comes down to this: I can barely read SiriusxRemus written by anyone else anymore. Shoebox project's writing is so heads and tails above everyone else attempting to write those two that it takes another truly exceptional author to make me consider it. I have come to consider their Sirius & Remus the "real" account of their teenage lives, that's how much they make the characters come alive. Shoebox!Sirius and Remus could stand on their own entirely without the actual Harry Potter books and be full, vibrant characters.
It's like, if there really existed a longer canon account of the HP!parents' early years, I believe Jaida and Rave got them down, man.
Does this happen to anyone else-- with a style of writing, or author, or pairing?
So, any other boxers out there? Or boxers of another fandom/pairing/author?
