My 20-10 birthday

Well, it was my birthday on Halloween, and I finally hit 30. I'm having a hard time understanding why some people I know have flipped out over turning 30. It just felt like any other day to me! It DOES feel surreal when I think about it, since I really don't feel 30 at all. My mom is freaking out a bit because she now has to say she has a 30 year-old daughter, when she says she feels about 35 herself! I'm the oldest of my generation by 6 years, so I have the honor of making all my aunts and uncles feel really really old muahaha.

I'm definitely not where I thought I'd be at this age, which is probably a good thing in many ways. I didn't think I'd have a 6 year-old daughter (being single or not) or that I'd have my PhD. I thought I'd have more money than I do now, but that's a direct result of the 2 great things I just mentioned, so it's all good. My 20s were rather tumultuous, and not exactly fun, although there were a lot of fun times. I see my 20s as having been a time of real personal growth, and a time when I conquered many of the residual demons that originated in my childhood. I'm really optimistic that I will shine in my 30s. I now have a much better idea of who I am and of what makes me happy in life, so now I have the opportunity to pursue those things and can work on being content with myself.

Anyway, enough with the reflecting! More about my actual birthday...

As usual, I had nothing planned to celebrate the day. I generally don't make a big deal out of my birthdays, and it being Halloween I usually do Halloween stuff with Sophia anyway. So I was rather shocked to unlock my office in the morning and find 8-10 people crammed in there with a surprise party! They even got me a really cool cake that looked like a piece of cheese with mice made out of frosting on top of it (yes, I work with rats, but mice were probably a lot cuter than a bunch of huge rats all over my cake!).

It was a really nice surprise. My mom sent me a birthday package, too, which she does every year. Oh, and I got flowers! They were from a friend of mine who has a major crush on me, so there was definitely an ulterior motive behind the gesture, but I still loved it haha. I'm not a big fan of flowers as a gift, but I can't remember the last time I was given any, so I ate it up.

So it turned out to be a really nice day, with some really nice surprises. Now I just have to work on being able to actually SAY "30" when someone asks me my age. Or do I? I could pull of 28 for a few more years, I think!
