The Write Place: Understanding

“A dress that zips up the back will bring a husband and wife together.”
-James H. Boren

Standing in the back of the church, Castiel listened to the wedding ceremony. He had never seen one of these up close before. As far as church rituals went, this one was very extravagant. There were flowers everywhere, peonies and roses, and small white lights that he remembered seeing hanging from roofs during Christmas. Everyone was dressed in suits and brightly colored dresses and the bride was decked out in a massive white gown.

He wondered why they needed so much. As he understood weddings, the point was to join two people together for life. He had heard the vows before, especially the “’till death do us part”. All the extra seemed like a cover, decoration for what should be a ceremony simply about love. He wished he had Pamela with him to explain. She would have some sort of explanation for all this.

Was it because humans as a people seemed to like pretty things? He had seen a lot of that during Christmas and over his time on Earth. They seemed to dress everything up. Even simple things like food and drink had taken on shiny and designed packaging. People looked at him strangely for his simple clothes. Dressing up a wedding would fit with that. Weddings had been secularized like everything else in the modern human world. The vows, the promise to God, had become secondary. So, they dressed it up?

He sighed slightly as the ceremony closed and the couple shared the first kiss as man and wife. He wished Pamela could explain it to him.
