Room 414, Sunday Morning

Had Karolina ever thought ahead to what it might be like to turn into a boy overnight, she would not have expected to freak out as much as she had. Complete with flailing and putting on layer upon layer of clothing as if that would somehow force her body back to normal. She also hadn't left her room since yesterday morning. Another super effective ( Read more... )

Jim had listened to the radio so he knew what was going on this weekend. And, after he'd woken up this morning, he grabbed some clean clothes and headed up to Karolina's room to check in on her.

He knocked lightly and said, teasingly, "Lemme hear your deeper voice."

Karolina considered just ignoring him. But, that wasn't really in her nature, so she got up and made her way over to the door, in her ill-fitting jeans and her huge wool sweater she'd gotten for the previous winter in Fandom. She only opened the door a crack to peer out at him, though. Kind of hiding.

She still had her big blue eyes and her pastel glow. That was something.

"Karolina?" he asked, smiling at her. "Look a little different, don't you?"

Karolina gave him something that would have been a withering look from just about anyone else. From her, it was... resigned, maybe?

She moved to open the door a bit further, to let him in.

"Are you not going to talk to me?" Jim asked, slipping inside the room and smiling at her. "We gonna communicate entirely through body language?"

Karolina made a slight face while she was closing the door after him.

Then, after a moment of silence, she said, "I don't like my voice."

It wasn't the absolutely deepest or manliest, but it was also not hers.

"It's going to go away, you know," Jim told her, tossing one of his shirts at her. "Brought you some clothes."

She caught the shirt, then held it in her hands like she didn't know what to do with it. It'd probably fit better than what she was wearing now, but she was also experiencing some mighty body discomfort right now.

"Thanks?"

A beat.

"Um, I mean, thanks. That's nice of you, Jim."

"Not having a good time with this, are you?" Jim asked, passing a pair of pants to her as well. "It's temporary. And you can stay in here if you feel better."

"That's what I've been doing," she admitted, hugging the clothes to her flat chest. "And no, I don't like it. I don't understand how Xavin does it."

... Had she even ever explained that Xavin was a shapeshifter who also changed genders? Probably not.

"Xavin can change genders?" Jim asked, raising an eyebrow. "Interesting. But, if that's something she's grown up with, then she's probably used to it. Knows how to deal."

"I know." She shrugged. "She was a guy when we met. But she's a Skrull and they can shapeshift. So she was a girl when we were supposed to get married."

"Guy you needs a haircut," he said, giving the shaggy hair a tug. "This is way outta control."

"No, it's too short," Karolina complained, but still smiled. A very tiny bit but still. "I don't like it."

"I'm sure it'll be back tomorrow," Jim said, crossing his arms. "Meanwhile, you look like you're swimming in those clothes. If you were wet, I'd say you were a drowned rat."

"They're comfortable."

They were not.
