Liam Titcomb CD Release Party - Monday, Mar. 14th

Mar 17, 2005 10:55

There was a slight bit of drama prior to the Liam Titcomb CD release party; it was sold out, and me without a ticket. The guestlist was so full they had to fight to get Denise Donlan in (the ex-pres. of Sony, due to merger, and the woman who signed Liam). I won't say how, but I managed to get in thanks to some clever ideas from Ben. I only saw the second set, but it was great. Ben played mandolin, and was lucky enough to share the stage with Tom Wilson (Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, Universal), and Dave Thompson (formerly of Wave, Warner). The latter of which consequently called Ben the next day to ask him to be his bassist for his new band, but I don't know if I'm allowed to talk about that in detail yet, so I won't.

After the show we went back to Liam's aunt's house for the afterparty. I got some cooking tips for tomato sauce from Liam's uncle who was hunched over the stove (like a man SHOULD be!), while I ate a tangerine and settled into the scene. I spent much of the time talking to the bassist who has played with some of the biggest names in the world, listening to his stories about being on tour with Robbie Robertson in Italy, and smoking hash all night with George Harrison in San Remo, watching the Sun come up on the Mediterranean. He said that George had asked him to smell his coat afterwards to check for the scent of hash, before going to his wife and newborn child elsewhere in the house. I thought this was a rather human display for someone I had deified, and it made me smile. There were also some inspired tales about seeing the Beatles at Maple Leaf Gardens at age 14, and what an incredible live act they were, contrary to the popular opinion that they were a studio band. There was some debate as to what year it was; he says 1966, but my mom (who was also there) says 1964. Either way, I was in storyteller heaven, and on assignment to rediscover and reconsider Rubber Soul as a great Beatles album.

Now, everyone go download Ben Folds' new cover of Dr. Dre's "Bitches Aint Shit". That is all.
