Computer miracle required: rl

Mar 02, 2008 12:00

My PC is dying.  It is terminal I fear.  When the inevitable happens I shall mourn its loss (and probably go insane until I get a new one sorted), but until then I am frantically backing up everything in the hope that I can pull everything important off it before it dies.

My DVD writer is only intermittently working, and then it makes a horrible groaning noise whenever I burn a disk.  My harddrive makes a grating noise when I boot up.  My graphics card clatters.  The whole machine is painfully slow at anything and keeps blue screening.

Its an old machine, one that was cobbled together from spare bits here and there several years ago.  Its been upgrading from time to time with new bits or rather new old bits that I have scavenged from my husbands business.  But the motherboard, chip and harddrive are the original parts that I put in and are showing their age.

I have spent the last few days defragging, checking for errors, scanning, messing around with settings etc in the vain hope that I can make the machine last a little bit longer but I think that it has earned its entitlement to eternity in PC heaven; since the day I built it it has been on for at least 12 hours each day.

So if I disappear for a short while you will know why, hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can sell my first born scavenge around and raise enough money to build a new one.  If I end up computer-less then I will be able to log in occasionally at work when the boss isn't looking I have a moment.

So please send vibes for a miracle lottery win, a massive pay rise, the computer fairies (bit like the tooth fairies but if you put your computer under your pillow they leave a nice shiny new one; so I have been told), or a cure for Elderly Computer Syndrome.....
