Title: Cataclysm
Rating: All ages
Characters: Nine/Rose
Genres: Alternate Universe, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Missing Scene
A/N: Another one I wrote a long time ago, it's just an idea I had which takes place at the end of Parting of the Ways. Its a sort of alternative ending story. I've blatantly plagiarised parts of the scripts from POTW, (there is a reason for that) so for that I acknowledge those incredible folks at the BBC who make the wonder that is Doctor Who. I don't own any of it, if I did then Christopher Eccleston would be in my bed right now and I wouldn't be here writing this!
Chapter five
The Doctor glanced over at Mickey, his eyes were red from crying. “Help Jackie will you? We need to get up to the flat”
The Doctor stood up and took hold of Jackie’s arms, which were still wrapped around Rose’s body in a death grip. He felt wretched, seeing Jackie so distraught. Rose was the one thing that had kept Jackie going after Pete’s death. She had missed her terribly when she joined the Doctor on the TARDIS, but he had sworn he would keep her safe. Now here he was bringing her dead daughter home. Worse still, the only reason she was dead was because she had come back to protect him. She’d had her whole life to look forward to, so much promise. Yet he was the one who lived on, fated to lose everything it seemed. Death for him, seemed so welcoming right now.
“Jackie” he said quietly, “look at me, we have to get inside, come on lets get Rose out of this rain” Mickey helped Jackie up and supported her as they walked to the lift entrance. Mickey had to almost carry her, it was as though all the fight had gone. The Doctor picked Rose back up and the three of them limped along making slow progress.
Once in the flat, the Doctor carried Rose through to her bedroom and laid her on the bed. It was still exactly the same as he remembered it, lots of pink, fluffy animals, a room for a teenager really, one full of life. Not a dead 20 year old. He slumped down at the side of her bed, leant against a chest of drawers and put his head in his hands. The tears came afresh, and he sobbed, great gut wrenching sobs. Mickey joined him in the bedroom after taking Jackie to her room and making sure that she was alright. He knelt at the side of the bed and stroked Rose’s face.
“What happened?”
The Doctor looked up, wiped his eyes and turned towards Rose. “She saved my life” he answered quietly. “You should have seen her, she was magnificent! She stopped them all, but it burnt her mind, the Time Vortex. It was too much for her, I tried to stop her, no human can take that. Then she tried to do something for me, I don’t think I will ever get over that, but it finished her. She was beautiful Mickey, what she did was beautiful.” He knelt up and stroked Rose’s hair then bent over and placed a gentle kiss on her lips. His tears were once more falling on Rose’s still face.
“She knew what it would do to her, the TARDIS made sure of that, gave her the choice. She still came, she was the bravest person I have ever known.” The Doctor said quietly
“You didn’t see her after you sent her back here Doctor. She was like a woman possessed, trying to find a way back to you. Rose would never have given up on you, she loved you”
Mickey was silent for a while, taking in what the Doctor had said. It was completely obvious to him now, why he never had a chance when the Doctor came into Rose’s life. He’d given her a life he never could and loved her more then he was capable of. This ancient man, broken and alone, had loved Rose more than he had loved life itself. He saw what Rose had given the Doctor too, a new start, hope, something to live for. Mickey realised that the Doctor was just as broken by all this as Jackie was. He wondered if either of them would ever recover from this.
Mickey sat with the Doctor for hours, evening became night as he sat listening to the Doctor pour his heart out about what Rose had done, listening to little anecdotes about life with Rose in the TARDIS, stories of places they had visited and things they had seen. Mickey wondered if he should be feeling a little envious, but in reality, that life wasn’t for him, and he knew that the Doctor had loved Rose in a much more intense way than he ever had. He realised that despite all that, the Doctor and Rose had never been intimate together, it had come close a couple of times but it seemed that neither of them had the courage to explore that side of their feelings. Mickey found he had a new respect for the Doctor, he could have easily taken advantage of Rose, she was in awe of him, obviously attracted to him and for a long time they had been living together, travelling together, but the Doctor hadn’t pressured Rose in anyway, and had in fact held back from that.
Jackie appeared at the doorway. Her hair was all over the place, her face was red and swollen from crying and her eyes were blood shot, but she seemed calmer now. She ran her hands through her hair and went and sat next to the Doctor. Taking his hands in hers she said “I don’t blame you for this”.
“Thank you” the Doctor croaked out, his voice was hoarse by this time.
“There is no way I could have stopped her from going back for you, I tried but well, you know what she is…….. was like, stubborn. You were everything to her and she wasn’t going to just accept you sending her back while you were risking your life. Its not your fault Doctor”
The Doctor smiled weakly at Jackie, then took her in a hug. “We both loved her, didn’t we?” Jackie asked, her head pressed into the Doctors chest.
“More than life itself” came the reply from the heartbroken Time Lord
