Good developments and good fortune

Beginning this Monday, I will be working doing fundraising for a local nonprofit organization, as well as hopefully running the office.  I traveled to Boston with some of the crew to talk with various representatives about the Safer Atlernatives Bill, which includes a provision for phasing out vinyl shower curtains.  Just yesterday, some scientific findings were released which revealed that that new shower curtain aroma contains over 108 volatile chemical compounds linked with reproductive harm, cancer, liver, and neurological disease.  These chemicals get into the air, and into the dust in people's homes, where they attach to dust particles and proceed to enter our bodies.  If you have children, the situation is worse, as this dust finds its way onto the floor, and then onto their toys, which end up in their mouths.  It is just as effective and economical to use a nylon or cotton shower curtain, and much less poisonous.

I did have the opportunity to meet a local representative at the state capitol in Boston, who subjected herself to a much-publicized toxicology test which found alarming levels of various toxic chemicals such as those found in PVC products - nice lady, and very sharp.  As America can only be as strong and healthy as its citizenry, and as no one should be forced to be subjected to such poisons against their will, I support this bill 100%.  If I ever have a kid someday, I want him to be strong and healthy, without a surplus of PCBs, etc, coursing through his young veins.  There is no need for it.

On another note, I attended a local Chamber of Commerce party a few days ago, and placed my business card in the drawing box for door prizes.  For the grand prize drawing, they pulled my card.  Now, a local club has a raffle on September 30th.  Tickets are 100 dollars apiece and there are only 450 of them being sold.  Well, a local bank purchased 100 of these 450 tickets (a 10,000 dollar donation).  So the prize I won at the Chamber event was those 100 tickets, meaning that I have a 1 out of 4.5 chance in a raffle for a Harley-Davidson FLSTN Softail Deluxe (105th Anniversary Collection).  This is a limited edition bike, and only 2500 are being manufactured.  This is a bike worth around  $20,000.  And whether I win that prize or not, I also am eligible for a cash prize of 500 dollars or 300 dollars.  So considering that almost 1/4 of the tickets in the hat will be mine, and they will be drawing 8 times from the hat, I am practically guaranteed to win something.

It might not be a million bucks, but having such good fortune so early on in the game can make you feel like it.  Here's to hoping the other tickets fall out the bottom of the hat :D  I won't ride the bike, though, since I promised my parents as a child that I never would ride a motorcycle.  Honestly, it does not appeal to me.  I'll sell it and invest the money.

Tonight - more networking, partying, and doing research on my new employer, etc., in order to be prepared for work on Monday.
