just another Summer money-churner

So i saw the new Choc. Factory movie last evening. i dare say i think i'm getting kind of weary of the Burton/Elfman formula, it's gotten to be the same ol' same ol'. i know straight off when i hear something by Danny Elfman in a movie, yet no one piece of music of his sticks with me or seems terribly distinct to me. And as far as Burton's end ( Read more... )

Sorry to make you sad, but yes, even the mighty, invincible phenomenon that is Tim Burton can produce summertime shlock. i need more than eye-candy (acting personnel and sets alike) to deem something a great film. It's not a triumph, but it got the job done. i'd never deny the people who made this movie are competent craftsmen, but i wouldn't hand them much more than that.

lets hope that his next movie, Corpse Bride (which is due out in Sept) is better... it sounds interesting enough, but it is going to be like A Nightmare Before Christmas, animated, and such. Did you ever see his movie Big Fish, you might enjoy that one, not really like his others, at least i think so...

i have not seen Big Fish, but i think i'd like to. As far as flicks that aren't his typical fare, i must mention how amusing and sweet i found Ed Wood to be. However, even in that one, i have a gripe re: the portrayal of Bela Lugosi. He was depicted as a pathetic man with these piddly little poodles, where in reality he raised large dogs like dobermans. That seemed a bit uncalled-for to me.

And again, it's not that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a bad movie, on the contrary, but it was simply that it was very typical Burton, and typical is typical.

I just feel like I *have* to watch some of these movies that are coming out these days, just because that seems like something you've got to do. Does that make sense? Hrm. Like even though the first new Star Wars was terrible, you kinda felt like, "Mm, maybe the second will be better." And that one turned out to be kind of okay, especially since the constant bitching about Jar-Jar was actually taken seriously -- so you saw the third. Everyone else saw it, too, and then you look back and say, "I should have just rented it, but I guess seeing it on the big screen was okay ( ... )

just for the record, i didn't see episodes II or III of Star Wars and i don't know if i really care to. There're so many great movies to choose from over the expanse of film history, i'd rather spend my time looking for some of those.
