Purple Kirtle

Jan 08, 2011 21:38

I'm about 90% finished with the purple kirtle! I just need to fix the hem and possibly add more trim. I'm not sure if I want to add the vertical black trim on the shoulder straps, since it looks okay as is.

Pictures! Not on me, since my timer thing on my camera sucks. They always turn out fuzzy. This dress fits me like a glove, despite making my dress form look 30 pounds heavier than I actually am. I'll take pictures of me actually in it soon.

Notes post-sewing:
1. No wrinkles on the bodice! AT ALL! HURRAH!!! I'm getting better!
2. Plum linen is from Joanns, and it's very soft. This was my first time working with linen, and holy crap, I loved it! The fabric is so... sewable! I can poke a million holes in it and you'll never see them! And it's strong and drapes so pretty. Well you guys already know this, but it's news to me!
3. I boned the hell out of the front of the bodice, and I really like how comfy this is- way better than the corset! I'll very likely use this method again soon.
4. Sleeves are lined and have turn-back cuffs, which is a style I've been wanting to try, and I think it looks rather unique. Most of my other sleeves are so simple.
5. I am very proud of my cartridge pleating on this dress. Is it totally perfect? No, but damn good anyways. I had to re-do the stitches matching the skirt to the bodice a few times but got it matched up right. The skirt has the perfect shape when it's on me, too.
6. I used two threads of an embroidery skein for the eyelets, which I saw Noelle do on her purple damask kirtle, and I love the difference. The eyelets are fuller and stronger than with regular thread.

I will be doing a petticoat post soon, comparing how my petti's look under my skirts, cause it's really funny to see the differences!
