Day 2: Tonopah, NV to Hurricane, UT (and Zion)

Jun 06, 2009 22:02

I am extremely smelly right now, but no one is around to care. Bittersweet. The cause of my stank is 10-odd miles of hiking up and down all over Zion... which for me is quite a bit. But I'll get to that...

Crazy beautiful drive today through NV, a corner of AZ and UT. I have pictures from this and from Zion up on facebook (two separate albums)- lots from today and there should be a few per day from now on.

Started out on the extraterrestrial highway. GREAT road. There are two reasons I wanted to take such isolated roads: beauty and isolation. ET had plenty of both. I saw two other cars in about 100 miles. Lots of cows- some of whom ambled into the road in front of me- but no people. AWESOME.

The whole drive was pretty stunning.

I keep seeing one sign over and over: "FALLING ROCK." What exactly am I supposed to do with this information? I mean, if a rock falls on me- i guess I cannot say they didn't warn me, but I don't see how knowing about the possibility is useful from a safety perspective.

In any case, I was able to get an early start and burn up the 370-odd miles to Zion by about 2 PM. This gave me about 6 hours to explore and I tried to make the best of it. I went on a bunch of different trails and did lots of climbing and descending. It is a pretty neat place.

It rained periodically, but the sun came out once in a while as well, and I attempted to take advantage of it for a few cool pics.

I'm exhausted now and looking forward to some rest. Tomorrow: Bryce in the morning and then over to Denver.
