Not a single day goes by when I'm on that campus that I am not aware of how privileged I am to be in law school. I tear up thinking about how unreal this is...not just for me...but for those who were before me...
I think about my grandmother... She once looked at me in admiration and pride, "you look like a secretary." She smiled at that and I remember thinking that was a weird analogy. Now I understand. In her day, being a secretary was a coveted job - one she couldn't even get. She wasn't afforded the opportunity to finish high school. She'd barely started before she had to quit to work as a maid to help take care of her siblings. That began a long life of working in the service industry. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But she didn't get to make a career of that. It was just job after job when you don't have a high school diploma or GED.
So when I think of how blessed I am to have the luxury of going to school, and any time I feel like slacking off, I think of my grandmother. Because she could only aspire to be something as lovely as a secretary. Never in her wildest dreams could she see herself as an attorney. I know she is so proud of what I'm accomplishing and I hope she knows how much she impacted me then and now.
