I'm home after 10 absolutely glorious days in Hawaii. I was re-writing memories that were first there with my ex, they're now over written by the things my husband and I did.
There were a Lot of firsts this time: Like.. Finding an Urgent care clinic so that my husband didn't develop pneumonia, So that I didn't get pink eye in both eyes. Walking 4 miles total to see new land being pushed out into the ocean by Kilauea, which you could see the plume of volcanic smoke from miles away.
There were memories that came to the surface, only to be wiped away when the place I went to was now out of business. A shame since that particular restauraunt was actually known for very good food. I suppose that even a tourist town like Kona is going to be hit by the recession. Several store fronts were abandoned and empty, but there were others that were thriving.
The food.. God the food was so different and unique. My husband had the goal of "Only eating Hawaiian", to which we started off with a meal at L&L drive in, kind of a Chinese meets Hawaiian place which is like a pimple on the face of the planet. They are EVERYWHERE, but they're also very good. For our first meal in Hawaii we had Kailua pig with cabbage, rice and Mac salad. NO ONE makes mac salad like the Hawaiian. It's just local, but I can't find it elsewhere that tastes as good.
I had him eat Spam Matsubi (Spam and rice wrapped with nori) and Saimin, while I ate chicken katsu. There was fish and Chips made out of Ono, which I ate and wanted more of, there was Hawaiian Ice - which was as big as a small mountain. The husband claimed it was too much for him to eat.. and it was! I however finished mine.
I saw my a'amakaua on every visit to the ocean. They would come up to me and though I longed to touch them, I didn't long to pay the $10k fine that came along with it. One visit brought 4, another brought a solitary one, she was at the city of refuge just waiting for me, as she had the first time I'd had my encounter with one. On our last day of snorkeling, there were a few on the rocks, but I didn't go to see them, I knew they were there for me.
Over all, the trip was flipping amazing. We loved it. We are seriously talking about moving there in two or so years.
