I am happy to report that I won a local bake-off.
I belong to a group that has a chili cook-off every fall. This year they decided to have both a chili cook-off and a dessert bake-off.
I’ve done chili the last couple of years, but because I always bring some type of vegetarian chili and they don’t have a separate category for that, I never win. There is no way that vegetarian chili will beat chili with meat if the majority of the voters are meat-eaters, even if it actually tastes better.
That all changed today. I made dessert, not chili and I won the dessert bake-off with a caramel apple cheesecake. It was a cheesecake with chunks of toffee in the cake, topped with cooked apples and drizzled with caramel on a graham cracker crust.
I won a chef’s hat with “TOP SWEETIE” on the brim and a chef’s apron with 2007 Dessert Champion on it.
And, finally: Kudos to me-I didn’t try any of the chili or the desserts, so I have to take everyone’s word for it. They all looked fabulous, but mine must have been a little more so.
