Paula Deen

Disclaimer: I am not a foodie or a cook. I don't follow the woman on TV, I never got into her cooking style, wouldn't have bought any of her stuff before her scandal and probably will not in future. But once I sat through her interviews and got to her one salient defence point, I shall say this:

She claims she was assaulted by a black perpetrator a few years back, and her description of the event is allegedly when she let the N word slip. Let me tell you, if I were robbed or assaulted, esp. if it were by an African American, I would have called him the N word, too! And to his face, if I ever saw him again. This I can discount as emotional reflex, as the N word is apropos of anybody who would harm somebody else to steal their belongings, as would "bastard", "IMBECILE", "mother-fucker" or half a dozen other epithets.

Paula is getting it in the neck becuase her apology tour was badly botched. Unreconstructed Southerners who just forget to edit themselves when referring to "coloured people" lost their charm some time after the passage of the Equal Rights Act  in the 1960s.  So instead of the genteel Southern housewife, she's starting to look like an Alzheimer's patient off her meds.  I hope she can catch her breath off stage and get some of her business back. But she's already reached Number one on the Amazon.com best-seller's list, so I have no sympathy for her. Bon appetite!
