I've recently discovered Isaac Albeniz. Spanish composer. I guess it could best be described if you too Schubert and Beethoven and you squished their music together, spiced it with Debussy in between two tortillas and made a sandwich out of it the result would be Albeniz. It's nothing short of amazing.
In the Absence of Truth is a good record. Transitional though. They had developed a sound which reached it's peak with Oceanic. After you make something as totally epic as Oceanic you either stop making records or you do something else. Yeah...um. I just got around to listening to Zelenka's Lamentations of Jeremiah and from the first phrase it's not only other worldly strange and disquieting it is unbelievably discordant, especially considering when it was written. In certain places it's impossible to tell the difference between the stringed instruments and the vocal instruments. ( Read more... )
