Without education, without the vaguest spark of curiosity, computers would not exist, vaccines would lay untested, and the vast undeveloped quadrants of the globe would remain unexplored. Learning, garnering knowledge from any source possible, enables a society to propel itself into the great beyond-the leading countries in the world are those in which education remains most readily available to the largest portion of the general public. Unfortunately, the systems which implement education in America suddenly appear lacking. Teachers may not be prepared to advance the cutting edge in technology into their curriculum or may not have the proper credentials to be educating at all. School districts, especially those in rural settings or inner cities lack funding to hire properly certified teachers and to accouter their schools with the tools necessary to further learning in the 21st century. Education, it seems, is in need of an overhaul; just four years ago, on January 8, 2002, the No Child Left Behind Act was signed into law in order to combat the seeming inadequacies of the educational system. But what has changed? Implicit in the Act are an entirely new set of problems that pose different challenges for both students and educators. Although the end goal appears to be quality education for all, No Child Left Behind is...not the best way to find it. Educators need to work arm-in-arm with students in order to better understand each child’s individual needs, rather than succumb to the unnecessary rigors of high-stakes testing.

And if taxes continue to be "cut" for the upper echelon of society, how does the government expect the educational system will even receive funding?

As a matter of course (and in no small part to get rid of all the ridiculous capslocks problems in Yamanaka's journal), I have agreed to participate in her charity auction. I think the idea itself is rather stupid and more than a little desperate sounding, but there are good intentions at work and I suppose I can't criticize that. As I, personally, don't have the money to donate to school rennovation funds, this is the least I can do--not all children are afforded the benefits of private schooling or tutoring, and no sort of high-stakes testing program will boost inner city learning morale. I will change what lives I can.
