What part of LA to what part of OC are you riding to/from? I've never taken the river channel, but I've heard from a bunch of people that if you plan on riding it - bring a gun. These are also from old 30 and 40-something cyclists, and supposedly things were way worse in the 80's/90's, but still. If I'm in Orange County and want to ride around Los Angeles, I'll ride to Long Beach and bring my bike on the Metrorail to LA and then ride around wherever up there. I don't think that's really your goal/intention, but whatever, just kind of throwing out a just-in-case anecdote.
I've painted my bikes with hobby paint (the brand is Tempur? or something? I used to use it on model cars) and spray paint. Mixed results on both of those, but I wasn't trying to do that great of a job in the first place. The model paint looks a lot better than the spray paint, but is WAY more time consuming because you have to paint it with a brush. There's probably MUCH MUCH MUCH more effective ways of painting bikes out there, but these are just the materials I had handy in my garage.
i just drive by the river everytime i go from LA to long beach (101 to the 710) and i always think "it would be awesome to ride alongside the river to long beach, then down the coast to newport". but ya, i dont doubt that its pretty creepy. and ive spray painted old beach cruisers way back in the day, but it was a super shitty job. maybe it was shitty cause i was like 13 when i did it, now im all old and skilled.
