baseball

so i know that many who read this could care less about baseball. fine. but there is still something i would like to share, something that explains perfectly about being a san francisco giants fan in this day and age, given what has been going on. it makes no excuses, lays no blame, just gives a mindset that we have that you don't since we were ( Read more... )

Those are some nice stats and reasons, but he was still using performance enhancing drugs during those years. But this is America and you can like whomever you want. In fact, I see this mindset of San Francisco Giants' fans to be very similar to another minority, those 30% who still support our president. Now, they have the right to still like him, even in the face of utterly overwhelming evidence to the opposite. :-)

but see, that's part of the article. we don't necesarily like him. he more often than not was a bastard to fans and the media, even from the beginning. it was a love-hate relationship. what he did (unlike our president) was his job, and for that we respect him. what he did pre-performance enhancing drugs or whatever is still enough to say that he did his part to save baseball in san francisco. of course he also changed with the game when it changed (for the worst, probably) in the late 90's. we aren't forgiving him for that. nor asking for him to be looked at with a blind eye (which many people believe mcgwire would have received if he still had the record at 70 since all along he was a media favorite, even though he has essentially admitted using steriods. but then again, look at sosa who was accused of knowingly using a corked bat and his career was never the same again). all we want people to know is that we can't give up on him so easily because of what he did for us. we can watch baseball (and all the new up-and-coming ( ... )

oh yeah. and also, i think our "love" for him right now is driven by everyone else's hatred of him. he is our player to love or hate, not yours. so we do get kind of defensive. when you play sports, more often than not the only players you truly hate on the other teams are the ones who are good, the ones who cause your team to lose. and now maybe the ones who are, unecesarily, drawing attention away from you. but of course the irony is that barry doesn't want the attention. he is not living it up in the limelight. which of course makes reporters come around more and makes people hate him even more. nice catch 22 there.

That's crap. Bonds is very similar to Pete Rose. Everyone loved Rose and he was a great player. Then, people discovered that he was illegally betting on games. Public opinion changed all over the country except for Reds fans. He was their hero, the man who led the team, the man who won it for the team, and they didn't want to let that go despite the fact that everyone knew the guy was a total scumbucket. They continued to defend him, although everyone knew it was crap, even them. We don't hate Bonds for his skills (currently performance enhanced skills), we hate him because he lied, cheated, and continually denies the facts. We hate him the same way (and for similar reasons) we hate Kobe Bryant, John MacEnroe, and Milli Vanilli. What you said about, "when you play sports [you must've forgotten that I played lacrosse and soccer for several years in college and high school and tennis before that], more often than not the only players you truly hate on the other teams are the ones who are good, the ones who cause your team to ( ... )

For some reason the above was posted as anonymous, but it's my comment/post. Once again, I'm not saying this to say that you should stop liking the Giants. I like the New Jersey Devils, but I admit to the fact that they are a bunch of cheaters who play dirty whenever they can. Giants fans seem to have that problem. He might have saved SF baseball in the early 90s, but since his known steroid use since the mid 90s, it's time to face facts, admit to his faults, and kiss his ass goodbye; your savior has turned out to be a bastard, it happens. No one is saying, "turn your back on teh Giants and never watch them again." We're just saying, "you guys should be booing him too and maybe that'll help get it into his sterioud inflated head that he's not wanted anymore in professional sports the way most cheaters aren't."
