so i know that many who read this could care less about baseball. fine. but there is still something i would like to share, something that explains perfectly about being a san francisco giants fan in this day and age, given what has been going on. it makes no excuses, lays no blame, just gives a mindset that we have that you don't since we were ( Read more... )

That's crap. Bonds is very similar to Pete Rose. Everyone loved Rose and he was a great player. Then, people discovered that he was illegally betting on games. Public opinion changed all over the country except for Reds fans. He was their hero, the man who led the team, the man who won it for the team, and they didn't want to let that go despite the fact that everyone knew the guy was a total scumbucket. They continued to defend him, although everyone knew it was crap, even them. We don't hate Bonds for his skills (currently performance enhanced skills), we hate him because he lied, cheated, and continually denies the facts. We hate him the same way (and for similar reasons) we hate Kobe Bryant, John MacEnroe, and Milli Vanilli. What you said about, "when you play sports [you must've forgotten that I played lacrosse and soccer for several years in college and high school and tennis before that], more often than not the only players you truly hate on the other teams are the ones who are good, the ones who cause your team to lose" has the caveat of "we hate them for their skills but we respect them for having said skills." In other words, your statement is applicable to athletes like Pele, Wayne Gretzky, Don Mattingly, Maria Sharpova, and Willie Mays, not cheaters like Bonds and Sosa.
Also, maybe the reason Bonds isn't living it up in the limelight is because all reporters want to know is how he can live with himself, how he can take records away from great players through cheating, and why he doesn't just admit that he's a cheater. Everytime he's been questioned over the past 3 years, he just rattles off some shit about how he is just a player and that they are all dragging his name through the mud while never answering the question, "If you're innocent, why not just take a drug test?"
Finally, it's called the Major League Baseball and all the players in it belong to the entire country. You might have more an affinity to the Giants because your from SF, but what about the people who live in states without baseball teams? They can't like players or teams or feel like the players and teams belong to them or have loyalty to the players and teams? To better illustrate this point, while it might be cool for some redneck player from some redneck team (like the Houston Astros) to say, "I hate niggers" in his team's state, it would still get him hit with some serious repercussions because it's not cool to say such a thing in the rest of the country. In other words, this player is accountable in every state and has to pay respect to them all (especially due to trades, expansion teams, and teams changing locations).

For some reason the above was posted as anonymous, but it's my comment/post. Once again, I'm not saying this to say that you should stop liking the Giants. I like the New Jersey Devils, but I admit to the fact that they are a bunch of cheaters who play dirty whenever they can. Giants fans seem to have that problem. He might have saved SF baseball in the early 90s, but since his known steroid use since the mid 90s, it's time to face facts, admit to his faults, and kiss his ass goodbye; your savior has turned out to be a bastard, it happens. No one is saying, "turn your back on teh Giants and never watch them again." We're just saying, "you guys should be booing him too and maybe that'll help get it into his sterioud inflated head that he's not wanted anymore in professional sports the way most cheaters aren't."

you know, i knew that comment was from you about two lines in. maybe even two words. didn't even need to get to the lacrosse part to figure it out.

i dunno. i guess the whole point of everything is that it is complicated. i think the thing that gets to us is that we have, in general, not liked barry bonds, but have respected him, sure. he is not treating us any differently than he used to. and we have gotten used to that. so he's not a media gem, but he never has been, and so to us that hasn't changed, and having everyone else make a big deal out of it is just annoying since we figured that out a long time ago. and in a way, just dumping him completely would be like killing your dog because it bit someone. which often is the way things go. but sometimes you don't. sometimes you keep them around. do i think the giants would be better without barry? i don't know. he certainly plays a role in the game. ask moises alou or whoever else hits behind barry. they tend to end up with very good numbers. it certainly wouldn't hurt me if he retired. his history with the team means the giants won't just dump him, i don't think. but hey, everyone says once his contract here is up he'll move to the american league and be a dh (a position which is just about the stupidest idea in baseball if you ask me...). let's see if he is like just about everyone else who just wants money and ends up on the yankees...

and also, thanks for commenting. it's been a while since i've had a good jonah argument to deal with ;).
