Architects vs. Architecture

Jun 07, 2006 10:09

I met an engineer today at the MU! He was an interesting dude. After finding out that I am an architecture student, he teased me and also gave me some advice. Anyone else would have thought he was just trying to scare me or detour my ambition. He wasn’t, he was just telling me the truth. If I truly stick to residential architecture (my main passion) I will be a starving artist, if you will. It could and would take years to get my name out there and establish credibility. Most architects in such circumstances never really make it. This engineer told me the best thing to do is get my internship and moonlight on the side building residential. This all makes sense. But what a cool guy to actually care enough to carry on a conversation with me. Before he left to meet the architect he was waiting for, he joked that it’s all about the engineers, without which architecture wouldn’t be possible. I smiled politely, but when he turned the corner I allowed myself a giggle.
