Before we hiked the Pyrennees we stopped in this town Vic. Vic is similar to Quebralas and about an hour outside of Barcelona. It´s a little farther north then Girona where I was almost two weeks ago.
In Vic we explored the market place. I enjoy market places because I love to people watch and there is so much activities. Venders shouting. The produce looked so fresh. I bought like a pound of red cherries. I really wanted to buy some carrots. Actually what I wanted to do was go along and say I´d like a little bit of everything could you pack it all up for me.
We also toured the historic town. The streets were narrow and made of cobblestone. The catherdral in the center of town was amazing. Inside was incredible too. I wanted to take pictures but Mass was going on then and so it seemed a little voyeuristic.
When we went back to the marketplace we walked over to a vender who wove beautiful baskets himself. I ended up buying one with red and yellow decoration. It is sort of fragile. I don´t know if I will will actually use it hold anything but it is a fun souniver from Spain. The vendor was a really sweet man. He asked me if I wanted to speak in Spanish or English since he knew a little English. I told him I was a guest in his country and I preferred to speak his language. We began conversing in Spanish. He was really interested that I lived in Ecuador for seven months last year. He told me he thought that Spanish in Spain had been contaminated and it was more pure in South America then in Spain. He went on to say that here there is the French, Catalunya influence so the Spanish isn´t pure anymore. I really enjoyed talking with him. I like that he asked me what language I wanted to speak in. It has bothered me a little bit that as soon as some of the locals hear my accent they switch to English. I want to speak their language.
On Sunday I went with two friends to the Jardins de Laberint d´Horta. It was really amazing. It was sort of tucked away and hidden a little ways up from the city. Everything was so green. The air felt fresh and clean up there. Entering the garden I really did feel like Mary in The Secret Garden with the vast walls. We took a few wrong turns before we reached the laberint. It was again lost in the best possible of ways.
It reminded me of this place I ran in my freshmen year of college in Minneapolis. From the laberint we had wonderful views of Barcelona.
