So, yesterday ended up being quite nice. The lady who won a book from me on Listia got in contact with me & we ended up meeting in person so I could give her the book instead of paying to mail it 10 minutes away from me. XD She was a nice older woman and we both laughed at what a small world it really can be some times (she was also amused when I ( Read more... )

You should find that book highly readable, although Hawking is no longer my favorite since he apparently got smarter than God. *cough*

I find it's a nearly laughable reflection on America that we have such a low tolerance of not hearing the sound of our own voices. Huzzah to Pixar for being the exception.

*actually, I hadn't fully focused on that and should do so now.

Is it weird I wanted to read it because I figured any scientist that regularly guest-stars on The Simpsons or Futurama can't be that difficult to understand? XD (Well, that's not entirely why, but that IS a reason)

I assumed it was because they're afraid that children might get bored if there are "too many" scenes with no talking? But honestly, it comes off as sounding rushed and/or ad-libbed to me. I think kids are a lot smarter than most people give them credit for.

It would be interesting to know Hawking's reasons for doing such things. A Brief History In Time is old news (ugh -- sounds arrogant -- I mean by SCIENCE standards ya kno), but the writing style is done very well and even...with a sense of humor. After Hawking I'd rec some books on string theory, but there is no need. Perhaps it is the interest you have RIGHT NOW that prompted him to do it.

Japanese children don't get bored. :P

Actually, funnily enough...I know a teeny-tiny bit about string theory! Because someone talked about it in a comic book I read once!

*GIANT DORK* XD

Oh, and the version of the book I got says it's an "updated" version...though updated in 1999. XD;;

idk, I guess it just struck me as "hmm...I should read this someday". Bucket Book List? lol

Absolutely, it's a great book and will surely deepen your understanding of life & the universe! However, a theologian, the author is not, and fortunately his earlier works are free of that jazz. I'm willing to bet his cooking ain't that great either. :P

As I always say, I am no great fan of the general theory of dark matter (I'm even less of a fan of the silly altering of the concept -- like "dark energy"), but Hawking has generally backed it. By the opposite token, String Theory had another great advance in another peculiar recording of the movement of atoms inside a particle smasher. Listen. I'm worse with this than with comic books, and will gnaw a person's ear off on this subject. xD
