Goodbye to a dear (digital) friend

(draft 1)

Putting aside for the moment that I cannot seem to regularly update my LJ the way I had wanted to, I thought if nothing else, tonight was deserving of a post.

Tonight I am saying goodbye to a digital friend. I canceled Sephyia's content ID, and deleted her from my POL log in menu. I suspect she will never be accessed again by me or anyone else. I gave Rurouni (the boyfriend of the REAL Sephyia) a chance to clear out the account of anything he wanted a few weeks ago, but as of tonight, the character of Sephyia is officially retired

Some Background Info

Sephyia has officially been my "second character" since about June of 2008. At the time she was, and still remains a 75 THF, WHM and RNG. The real Seph was quitting the game since she was finished school and was heading effectively from one coast to another to be with her boyfriend. The two had treated FFXI as an activity they could do together with the great distance between them, but both were looking forward to some rest and focus on time together.

I cannot overemphasize what wonderful people Rur and Seph were to have worked with in Knights. They attended virtually every event, came on whatever jobs were needed and never once complained. I always tried to make sure they were looked after in terms of gear, but their dedication and often leadership-roles made getting them what they wanted a no brainer. Both Robert and Becca knew before almost anyone else I was planning to step down as leader of Knights, and kept it in confidence. Running a Linkshell is a funny thing. You spend countless hours organizing events, helping people get their shit.. But often when you, as an individual, not a leader ask for help with something in the game, it's interesting to see who your real friends are. Rur and Seph were those kinds of people who would always lend me a hand even with a trivial task at 11:00 at night after a 4 hour event. They were good people whom I wanted the best for.

Anyway, it was June of 08, and I had made a decision to quit the game finally (or so I thought). I had stepped down as a leader in Knights, and was slowly getting my affairs in order when boom, out of the blue my main account got hacked.

To make a long story short, since the real Seph was quitting, and I was characterless, Sephyia was loaned to me until I could get Sobius back from Character limbo. When I got Sobi back, I kept Seph active as well.

There's not a lot I can say about Sephyia as a 2 box, other than the fact I started to think of her and Sobi as a team. She probably spent over 100 hours in the bottom of Castle Zvahl Bailies farming demon weapons which eventually paid for my Morrigans Robe (before SE nerfed it). She was a godsend when I was levelling Blue Mage and needed to learn Blue Magic Spells, and of course she was extremely useful for her Treasure Hunter 4.

Although the account was mine, I tried to always keep her "orderly." Eventually her WHM and THF buffers were capped and I added a few dozen merits to her over time. In BG she was often a standby TH whore, getting a hit in on Odin or the JoL before we would kill it. In Dynamis she was a 2 box healer. Occasionally (and painfully) I would bring her to Salvage and 2 box Sobi and Seph (which was the name of the game if you knew our salvage group).

Seph's THF was functionally "pimped." Save the newer Skadi gear, and critical weapon skill pieces, there was little outside of a relic she needed to complete the job. I was always very proud of that character as a 2 box.

End of the Road

With my gradual loss of interest in FFXI and lack of time to play, I have decided to finally shut Sephyia down. Her character played a short, but nonetheless integral part of my FFXI journey and I will not forget her. It's funny because at one time, I scoffed at people playing 2 characters at once. Playing Sephyia and Sobius at the same time became second nature to me after a time, to the point I would get bored running only one.

Goodbye Sephyia from the world of adventuring. Enjoy your rest. and thank you!
