All beds in hall are hard and narrow. But you're much better off in hall than you would be in digs - believe me. You can get terribly isolated in digs or a flat whereas in hall there are always people around - even if they're not the people you especially want to see right now ;)

You've no idea how much gay and straight society have integrated since my university days! Whatever you may think of the situation now it bears no comparison to the way it was then. Which is fine. Ghettoes do nobody any good, whether gay or straight.

I bet you feel better in a week or two's time.

I wasn't drunk when I wrote that. I meant I had previously, at other times, had a lot to drink.

Don't isolate yourself on the first week of uni. If you do, you fall into a pattern, and it's very hard to get out. You seem to be doing all the right things - going out and socialising. I know at times you'll feel like you'd rather not bother, but in a few months, you'll realise that you did the right thing. Even if the friends you make in the first week are not the people you want to hang around with, you'll get into the habit of going out and doing things, and not isolate yourself.

(I know this sounds really apocalyptic, but I speak from bitter experience).
