No, I wouldn't. To me, fanfic is a fantasy and like all good fantasies/romances, the OTP much be just that. You might pull them apart for a time, but in the end? I want them together. And as a writer, I can testify that many people won't read or will stop reading if they believe that's where you're going with your story. Sure, there are some like you who will stay with it, but I've seen wholesale rebellion at the first suggestion that the two lovers will be going their own ways.

I understand where you come from and I mast admit, that the story has to be really good for me to read it under those conditions. I don't think it works for all fandoms with me, like QAF is a big no no, Brian and Justin are meant to be together ^_^. But well, Bleach where my favorite are Grimmjow/Ichigo, I can easily read Ichigo with almost anyone as long as he and Grimmjow didn't have any interest in each other in the first place.
