home improvement

In the past few days, we have been major contributors to the economic statistics they love to read on Morning Edition.

Friday: We purchased our house! *throws confetti in the air!* We signed reams and reams of paperwork, swore our souls and possible first-born issue to the mortgage company and gained title.

The Mommy-Llama and Daddy-llama took us out to dinner to celebrate, then I showed them the house.

M. and I spent a lot of time in hardware stores looking at flooring and paintchips. M wants to install the floor himself. So far, he has purchased for the new house: A lawnmower, a miter saw (for the floor), some garden hoses, random tools for ripping up the floor, some "goo gone" adhesive cleaner, paper towels etc. We still have to purchase a fridge, washing machine and dryer (those "durable goods" economic indicators they like to talk about.) The popular washing machines appear to be the front loaders, which are more water and energy efficient and use special low-sudsing detergent. I thought that was pretty nifty.

Yesterday, I had BarBri at UMKC in the morning, and came by the new house afterwards bringing lunch for M. and his mom, who were hard at work ripping up the kitchen floor. We thought the kitchen floor was wood laminate, but turned out to be vinyl strips patterned to look like wood. It was a hell of job chiselling the vinyl "wood" strips and the underlying ancient linoleum floor up. This week, M. will purchase the new laminate for the kitchen and hallway and install it next week, when he comes back from his grandfather's tombstone unveiling in Cleveland.

We spent more time in various very large home improvement centers looking at paintchips and purchasing tools. Those places (and there are a lot of Home Depots and Lowe's and Sears) do good business around here.

Today, have managed to get some bar studying in. Still have to complete some practice essays for tomorrow. Luckily, the KU law library is open til 11pm tonight for summer school finals. Also, have done some laundry (useful for wearing clean clothes tomorrow).
