In Kansas, this means picking who gets to be on the strangely influential KS Board of Education When your school board election (in Kansas!) makes the New York Times, you know something is very, very wrong.
In KS, we have 3 choices: Conservative Republicans (see Phill Kline, who likes to subpoena your medical records to make sure you're not having abortions), moderate Republicans (in the mold of Sen. Bob Dole), and moderate Democrats (our current Gov Kathleen Seblius).
There are no left wing anythings in KS, unless you count the Anarchist Collective on Mass Street, here in Llamaville. But, to misquote Mark Twain, naked people have little or no influence on society.
Dems don't have much of a primary, so if you want to see the real backbiting, you watch the conservative/moderate Republican fight in the primaries. If the conservative wins in the GOP primary, (and is wacky enough), the moderate Republicans all vote for the Democrat in the general election. (Which is why my parents' congressional district, the 3rd, which is overwhelmingly Republican, keeps electing Democrat Dennis Moore to Congress. All the Republicans that try to run against him are invariably of the rather conservative type.
