Greetings from Woodmere, Long Island. Today, had a productive and exhausting day. This morning awoke early to accompany Dad and Bubbe and Zeide to the doctors' office. (Completed Monday NYTimes crossword puzzle while in the waiting room...Kept thinking of "Oh, the places you'll go" and the illustration of the "waiting room". ) Dad and I snuck out to buy bagels, including everything bagel cream cheese and lox sandwiches (nectar and ambrosia!) Mom and I then went walking along central avenue and hit all the Judaica stores in search a mezuzah for the new apt. Got a practical weatherproof alumninum one and an awesome venetian glass interior one. We met a nonjewish couple whose daughter was married to a jewish man who were looking for a mezuzah as housewarming gift. My mom and I were really impressed by their desire to please their daughter and appeal to her Jewishness.
Later, my parents and I, along with cousin Natan, went to CostCo and got my grandparents a new TV. We couldn't have budged that thing w/o Natan's help, (my dad's arm is in a sling since he fell down last week). After wards, Natan and i picked up dinner stuff from the grocery store (we got the 2nd to last piece of salmon in the whole place being the last of the nine days before Tisha B'av and observant jewish housewives eschewing meat buying fishies instead. ) After dinner, I klonked out and missed synagogue and the traditional reading of Lamentations (Heb: Eichah), which details the siege of Jerusalem by the Assyrians (Babylonians?) in 587 BCE and the destruction of the first Temple. There are some graphic depictions of true starvation and desperation. Makes me think of the TV images out of Fallujah.
