Summary: AU - set near the beginning of Season 1; what would Neptune be like if Lilly had survived the attack.
Author’s Note: I started this the summer after Season 1, basically two years ago, and I’ve finally gotten around to finishing it. I’ve posted it in two parts - first part I wrote two years ago, second part two days ago. There might be a difference in style… maybe… I don’t know. Also, I forgot where I had planned to go with this story, so… whatever. Enjoy.

Veronica looked to the table on her left to see Lilly Kane sitting with her brother, Duncan, and her newest partner in crime, Madison Sinclair. Without looking to her right, she knew that Logan Echolls sat with Dick and Beaver Casablancas, and Sean Fredrick.
Studying her lunch, Veronica sighed.
Ever since word got out that the superstar Aaron Echolls assaulted a minor - namely Lilly Kane - the entire population of Neptune had taken sides. Half the town took the side of the innocent, impressionable schoolgirl that the evil movie star had taken advantage of. The other half sided with the falsely accused action hero who could do no wrong.
Aaron supporters viewed Lilly as a slut and knew that she somehow manipulated the family man into cheating on his wife. Lilly supporters blamed Aaron for being a perverted psychotic jackass and thought his son was no different.
At Neptune High, there were few who hadn’t taken a side, even fewer who admitted their neutral stance and fewer still who were on both sides. In fact, there was only one person who openly admitted to her belief that Lilly had been a victim, and that Aaron’s actions were just that - Aaron’s actions. She would not persecute the son because of the deeds of the father.
So there Veronica sat, in what had affectionately been dubbed ‘Switzerland,’ at the one table that anyone could sit at without reprisals. She was left out of the conflict due to her unwavering friendship with both the feuding parties and to the fact that her father was sheriff.
In order to maintain her privileged position, Veronica made sure that each side was given an equal amount of her time and attention. She’d been fine with the arrangement at first because she thought everything would eventually blow over, but it had now been one year since the split had occurred and there was no sign of it ending.
--
“Veronica, come with us to the beach tonight.” Lilly always made her invitations sound more like demands.
Wincing, Veronica apologized, “I can’t. I promised that I’d hang out with Meg and them tonight.”
Lilly sneered, “You mean Logan.”
Rolling her eyes, Veronica shrugged. “He’ll probably be there too.”
“Why do you insist on wasting time with him?”
“Because he’s my friend.”
“May I remind you that his father almost bashed my brains out?”
“His father. Not him. Logan had nothing to do with Aaron’s actions. You know that better than anyone.” Veronica slammed her locker shut. “In fact, he used to be your friend too.”
“That was a long time ago,” Lilly muttered.
“Not so long,” Veronica stared at Lilly for a moment. “Not so long ago, you used to be my best friend. Now, except when you’re with me, you’ve become this big bitch. Where did my Lilly go?” She sighed, “I’ve got to go.”
Lilly stopped her. “If I’m such a bitch, then why are you still friends with me?”
She reached up and touched Lilly’s cheek. “Because I know that somewhere inside you is my Lilly… and I don’t just give up on my friends.” Kissing her cheek, Veronica walked away.
Lilly stood in the hall watching her best friend walk away. She whispered for no one to hear, “You don’t just give up. Kind of like you never gave up on Logan.”
--
“Hey, gal pal!” Meg greeted, looping her arm around Veronica’s. “Ready for some fun tonight?”
“Where are we going anyway?”
“Logan’s. He’s having a little party.”
Veronica grinned, “Excellent.”
“Going to whip some boys at poker?”
“If I get the chance.”
“Can I watch?”
The girls giggled as they climbed into their respectively cars. Veronica waved as she pulled out of the school parking lot and headed home to change.
“Honey, how do you feel about having tacos tonight?” Lianne asked as Veronica entered their house.
“No feelings whatsoever,” Veronica rolled her eyes. “I told you yesterday I was going out, remember?”
“Right,” Lianne managed to muster. “Well, I guess it’s just me and your father.”
“Dad’s working tonight,” Veronica reminded as she headed up the stairs. She had lost her rose-colored glasses when it came to her mother months ago. The drinking and the lying were beginning to get on her nerves. Leaning back against her bedroom door, she sighed. How did her father handle it?
--
“Ronnie!” Logan spread his arms wide in greeting. “You made it.”
“Of course I made it,” she replied as he engulfed her in a hug. “You know I couldn’t resist the opportunity to take all you boys for everything you’ve got.”
“No way, man,” Dick shook his head. “The girl cannot play.”
Logan smirked at Dick. “Afraid?”
“Yeah, Dick?” Veronica teased, “Are you afraid of little ol’ me?”
“Yes,” Dick replied, “but that’s not the point. We’ve already got enough players.”
“That’s alright,” she smiled, “I’ll just hang out with the girls.”
“Sit with me for awhile,” Logan stated. “I want to ask you something.”
“Alright,” she took the empty seat next to him. “What’s up?”
“I need to ask you a favor.” Logan leaned in close to her, so that he could whisper in her ear. “Go with me to homecoming?”
“What about Caitlin?”
“The cheating skank? She’s yesterday’s news.”
“She cheated on you?” she asked in disbelief.
“Hard to imagine, isn’t it?” he smirked. “Don’t worry. I’m not heartbroken. Starting on Monday, she’ll be a social pariah.”
“Logan,” she said warningly.
“I can’t help it if my friends are loyal.” He shrugged. Pulling back to look at her, he prodded, “So?”
“Alright.”
Smiling, he kissed her cheek. “You’re the best.” He leaned back in his chair, returning his attention to the poker game. “Deal me in.”
Dick and Cassidy studied Logan for a minute before exchanging glances. Dick finally asked, “Well?”
“Well, what?” Logan said obtusely.
“Is she coming?”
“Of course,” Logan grinned, “like that was ever in question.”
Veronica shoved his shoulder. “You better be nicer to me or I might ditch you to go with someone else.”
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“I have plenty of other offers.”
“Yeah? Like who?”
She smirked, glancing at all the boys sitting at the table.
Logan turned to his friends and was shocked to see three of the four of them raising their hands. Only Dick hadn’t asked Veronica since he was dating Pam. “How’d you manage to get invites from Cassidy, Luke and Sean?”
“And Casey,” Luke added, gesturing to the lanky boy on the other side of the room.
“I heard that even Weevil asked her,” Cassidy added.
Logan sneered, “You mean he’d not Lilly’s lap dog anymore?”
“Be nice,” Veronica cajoled. “Weevil stopped seeing Lilly a long time ago. He - like half the population of Neptune - became disillusioned with her last year. Haven’t you noticed that he’s been nicer to you?”
“He has?” Logan said skeptically.
“Sure. He only snipes at you when you cross paths.”
Rolling his eyes, he asked, “Who else has asked you to the dance?”
“Troy Vandegraff,” she wrinkled her nose in distaste, “Corny, Vincent, Kelvin, Viet, Patton, John, Duncan
-”
“Duncan?” Logan said in surprise. “Duncan asked you?”
She nodded. “I think he wants us to get back together.”
“Are you considering it?”
“No.”
“Did you tell him that?”
“Yes, but I don’t think he took it very well.”
“Do you need us to make him leave you alone?” Dick offered.
“No. Duncan’s harmless.”
Dick glanced at Logan. Seeing the imperceptible nod, he said to Veronica, “Just let us know.”
“So, of the multitude of guys that asked you to the dance, why’d you agree to go with me?”
She smiled at him impishly. “Because you seemed the most desperate of the bunch.”
“I resent that. I’m not desperate.”
“I’m doing you a favor, remember?” she laughed. “Oh, that reminds me. You better tell Pam to stay away from me,” she mentioned to Dick.
“What’d she do?” Logan frowned.
“Nothing. Just that she and Kimmy seem to be doing their single white female routine.” Veronica shuddered, “It’s disturbing.”
“Kimmy’s still trying to be Meg?” Cassidy asked curiously.
“Yeah, and it’s getting ridiculous. Even Meg’s starting to notice.”
“Oblivious, too nice for her own good Meg noticed?” Logan teased, “Then there’s definitely something wrong with Kimmy.”
“I heard that she might be sleeping with the school’s tech guy,” Sean commented.
“Really?” Dick raised his eyebrow. “Well, isn’t she a naughty one?”
“Older man,” Logan tsked, “that’s dangerous territory.”
Pam arrived in time to hear that comment and added, “I heard that the history teacher is sleeping with one of his students.”
“What’s with our school’s faculty?” Logan shook his head in mock dismay. “Praying on young impressionable fems like that.”
“You have to admit that the school’s IT guy is kind of hot,” Veronica commented.
“And how would you know?”
“I’ve seen Mac speaking to him on occasion.” Veronica smiled, “And Renny Demoy is not that much older. He’s twenty-two. Mr. Rooks can’t be a day younger than thirty-five.”
“Either way, you’re all still jailbait,” Dick smirked.
“Doesn’t matter to me,” Veronica shrugged. “The only older guy that I’m even the slightest bit interested in is the new deputy.”
“Really?” Logan said curiously. This was the first he’d heard of this. “A law official.”
“He’s nineteen… and he’s in a band.”
“Does the deputy have a name?”
“Leo Dimatto,” Veronica said. “He started a few weeks ago.”
“Deputy Leo, huh?” Logan frowned, “Maybe we should cause a ruckus. Get the sheriff involved. I need to check this guy out.”
“Don’t you dare.” Veronica warned, “If my dad has to break up one more of your parties within the next month, he’s not going to let me come over anymore.”
Pouting, he said, “Then maybe I’ll just go down to the station and pay this guy a visit.”
“I’ll come,” Dick offered.
Cassidy nodded.
“No, you won’t,” she said sharply.
“We’re just looking out for you, Ronnie,” Logan smiled innocently.
“Well, I don’t need you to. Leo’s just someone nice to look at when I’m waiting for my dad. I would never date him.”
“Why not?”
“Well for one, he works for my dad. That would just lead to all kinds of weird.”
“And two?”
“He’s too nice.”
“What’s wrong with nice?” Cassidy asked.
Logan raised an eyebrow at his defensive tone.
“Nothing’s wrong with nice. It’s just that I’ve already dated nice… and it was boring.”
Logan and Dick broke into laughter.
She crossed her arms around her stomach. “It’s not that funny.”
“Yes, it is,” Logan laughed. “Is that why you’re not saying ‘yes’ to Duncan? You want a little more excitement in your life?”
“Partially.”
“Come on, Ronnie, share,” he urged.
She smiled, glancing at all the boys at the table. “You now what? I don’t think so.” Getting up from the table, she snuck away before they could stop her.
Dick and Cassidy exchanged looks before turning to Logan. “Are you going to check out the new Deputy?”
He smirked, “No, I know she’s not interested.”
Sean leaned back in his seat. “I don’t see why you don’t ask her out already. You’ve been pining for her for months.”
“If you noticed that then why did you ask her to homecoming?” Logan glared.
Wide eyed, he fumbled for an excuse. “She’s hot.”
Luke shrugged, “If you weren’t going to ask, I figured I’d take a chance.”
Cassidy nodded his agreement.
Logan rolled his eyes at his friends. He sighed, “I haven’t asked her out because I don’t want her to have to choose between me and Lilly.”
“Who cares about that skank?” Dick scoffed.
“Veronica does,” Cassidy pointed out.
“They’ve been best friends for years,” Logan commented, “and if Veronica had to choose between a relationship with me or her friendship with Lilly…”
Luke finished for him, “You’re afraid that she’ll pick Lilly.”
Sean raised an eyebrow, “I never knew that the great Logan Echolls would ever fear rejection.”
“Only Veronica’s,” he said somberly. “Only Veronica’s.” Flipping the chips in his hand, he changed the subject. “Come on. Let’s play cards.”
--
Meg found Veronica in the kitchen grabbing a can of pop from the fridge. “That’s a lot of Skist,” she commented.
Veronica smiled, “Logan keeps it in stock for me because he knows it’s my favorite.”
Meg had a grin on her lips. “That boy is gone over you.”
She looked down sadly at the top of the can in her hands. “I know.”
“What’s wrong?”
She shook her head.
“He didn’t ask you to homecoming?”
“He did, but he said it was a favor.”
“You know he worships the ground you walk on.”
“But he’ll never ask me out, because of Lilly.”
“You think he still loves Lilly?”
“No, but he thinks Lilly will never talk to me again if I date him.”
“And he doesn’t want you to have to choose.”
Veronica shook her head again. “He’s afraid I’ll choose Lilly over him.”
“Would you?” Meg asked softly.
She raised her eyes to look up at her friend. “No.”
--
“Veronica!” Keith shouted from the front door. “Your date’s here!”
“Coming!”
Keith gestured Logan into the house. “You went all out, didn’t you?” gesturing to the flowers in Logan’s hands, the new tux and the limo waiting outside. “Trying to win my daughter’s heart?” he teased.
Logan smirked, “No, yours. The flowers are for you.”
“How sweet,” Keith took them, playing along with the young man’s joke. He pulled the card from the bouquet of red tulips and he smirked as he read, “‘Dear Sheriff, please don’t shoot me for taking your beloved daughter out. Love Logan.’ You really shouldn’t have.”
“Just covering my bases.”
They turned towards the stairs when they heard clattering on the steps. Keith went to grab Backup before the pit bull started chewing on Logan’s pants. He was surprised when the dog lumbered around him to rub up against Logan’s legs in greeting. Keith eyed him suspiciously, “What did you do to my dog?”
Logan crouched to rub Backup’s neck, patting the dog on the back. “What can I say? I’m a dog person.”
“Backup, come here,” Keith commanded.
The dog whined, moving closer to nudge Logan.
Before Keith could comment, Veronica finally came down the stairs. Both men turned to look at her.
Encased in a simple blood red corset, she twirled so that her black tulle skirt fluttered around her. Her long blond hair settled in loose curls with her bangs covering her forehead. Veronica smiled at the two men before kissing her dad on the cheek. “Night, Dad.”
“Be home by one.”
Veronica patted Backup’s head, wrapped her arm around Logan and then guided them out the door with a wave to her father.
Once ensconced in the limo, Logan finally spoke. “You look beautiful.”
“Thanks,” she smiled. “You look very handsome yourself.”
“I know.” He brushed her bangs to the side before handing her a corsage. “This is for you.” He held the band open so she could slip her hand through. Settling it on her wrist, he took her hand and kissed it.
She smiled as she studied the red roses of her wristlet. “It matches my dress.”
He blushed. “I asked Meg to come pick it out with me.”
“I love it.”
“So,” he commented, “interesting choice of outfit.”
“What? You don’t like it?” She squashed her skirt down.
“I like it. I just expected you to go for something like you wore last year.”
“Pink and poofy?”
“You’ve stuck with the poofy.”
“The red is too much?”
“No, it’s sexy.”
“I can’t be sexy?” she asked defiantly.
“You’re always sexy,” Logan commented without thinking.
Veronica grinned impishly, “You think so?”
He rolled his eyes. “Yes. Now you’re too sexy.”
“Good. That’s what I was aiming for.”
Logan frowned. “Why?”
“I’m trying to get a boy’s attention.”
His eyes narrowed. “What boy?”
“Not telling.”
He tried to cajole her, “Please.”
“Nope.”
“Then I guess I’ll just have to beat up everyone that looks at you.”
“You can’t do that.” She turned toward him, worried.
“You leave me no choice.”
“Well, you’ll never beat him up.”
“Why not?”
“Think ‘Fight Club’.”
He blinked.
She watched him, waiting to see if he understood.
“Huh?”
Apparently not. She sighed, “You know the part where he’s beating himself up?”
He nodded slowly.
“I don’t think you’d ever do that.”
The limo stopped at their destination.
“Logan?” she asked when he didn’t move.
Mindlessly, he climbed out the door that the hotel porter graciously opened. He helped Veronica out and then led her to the ballroom, stopping just outside. Logan looked at her. “Me?”
She blushed and nodded.
“You didn’t have to dress up to get my attention,” he whispered. “You always hand it.”
“I know,” she smiled up at him, “but you weren’t doing anything about it. I needed to do something to get you going.”
“Message received.”
“Took you long enough.”
Moving his arm from her grasp, he wrapped it around her waist, pulling her close. “A little slow on the uptake,” he admitted, “must be all the TV.”
“Or the video games… the drinking… being surrounded by idiots?” She thought for a moment, “Maybe I don’t want you after all.”
He held her tightly as she tried to pull away. “Too late. You’re mine now.”
“If you insist.”
“I do.” He didn’t relax his hold. “I definitely do.”
--
“So?” Meg skipped up to Veronica at the bar.
She blushed and nodded.
Meg squealed. “That is so great!”
Veronica sipped from her glass, looking over the edge of it to stare at Logan who was chatting with the boys. She smiled at Meg, “You look great, by the way.” Complimenting her simple blue strapless gown.
“Me? Look at you.”
Veronica spun for her.
Meg shook her head, “Your waist is so tiny.”
“So’s the rest of me,” Veronica laughed.
Logan walked up behind her, sliding his hands around her aforementioned waist. “That’s because you’re my tiny girlfriend.”
Meg contained her ‘aw’ as she watched Veronica lean back against him. “Your corset’s not too tight, is it? You can breathe?”
“I’m fine.” She looked down at herself. “It actually fits like a glove. No odd squeezing. Only a little lift.”
“I can see that.” Meg looked at Logan eyeing Veronica’s cleavage.
Veronica followed her friend’s line of sight and slapped Logan’s hands lightly. “Stop ogling.”
“But they’re so nice.”
Meg gasped, but managed to contain her laughter behind her hand.
Turning in his arms, she faced him. “You realize that if people see you checking me out like this, they’ll do the same.”
Frowning, he pulled back. “I’m covering you up.” He was in the process of removing his jacket when she stopped him. “Veronica.”
“Just save your staring for later.”
“Later?”
“I called my dad and told him that I was staying over at Meg’s tonight.”
--
“So, you and Logan?” Lilly looked at Veronica with a frown plastered on her face.
“Yes, me and Logan.”
“How long has this been going on?”
“Tonight.”
“You got together tonight.” Lilly stated for her own benefit. Her mind worked through this information. She had thought that Veronica had been secretly dating Logan behind her back, but that wasn’t the case. A grin spread across her face. “I knew you liked him, you bitch.”
Veronica felt a weight lift from her shoulders. “You’re not mad?”
She scoffed. “Why would I be? Logan and I are so over. You’re welcome to my leftovers.” She smirked in that way only Lilly could.
“Does this mean you’ll talk to him again?”
Her smirk fell. “I don’t think so, Veronica. I’m happy for you and Logan, but -”
“You’re still against everything Echolls,” Veronica sighed. “Just promise me that you’ll try to be more you than Madison Sinclair.”
Lilly laughed. “Veronica!”
“What?” she defended, laughing too. “She’s dating Caz for heaven’s sake.”
“Better than Dick.”
“I actually feel sorry for Dick. He has to put up with Pam.”
“You’re a riot, Veronica Mars.” Lilly giggled as she realized how much Veronica had changed since last year. Impulsively, she hugged her best friend. “You do strapless, red satin better than I ever imagined.”
Veronica looked down at her outfit. “It’s not too much?”
“Definitely not. You’re hot, Veronica Mars. I’m glad you finally realized that.”
“And I’m glad you decided to tame your ways,” Veronica smiled, “at least a little.”
“Tame?” Lilly spun in her skintight strapless silver dress that hugged her curves all the way down to the ground with two slits up the sides that practically reached her hips.
Veronica laughed as she walked away. “Your breasts aren’t showing.”
--
“What can I do for you, DK?” Logan said grimly, as he noticed Duncan standing behind him, reflected through the bathroom mirror.
“How could you?” he asked accusingly.
“How could I what? You’re going to have to elaborate.”
“You stole her from me.”
“Stole? I didn’t steal anyone,” Logan sneered. “She chose me.”
Duncan looked like he’d been slapped. He thought that Veronica had simply come to the dance because Logan had asked her. He knew how nice she was and knew that she’d say ‘yes’ to anything Logan asked because he thought she pitied him. “She what?”
“Veronica chose me. She made the first move. I’m just happy as hell that she did.”
“You’re lying.”
“And you’re deluding yourself.” Logan turned off the tap, flicking the water from his hands. He accepted the warm towel from the bathroom attendant.
“Veronica would never choose you over me.”
“Ask her yourself. I know no matter what I say, you’ll never believe me.”
“You’re supposed to be my friend,” Duncan swore.
That made Logan angry. “Excuse me? I’m supposed to be your friend? I don’t think so. Where were you this past year? Because I can tell you where you weren’t. You weren’t with me. You pretended like I didn’t exist. I was no one to you. So explain to me how I am supposed to be your friend.”
“What was I supposed to do? Your father attacked Lilly.”
“That’s right. My father did,” Logan said bitterly. He let out a cold laugh. “You know, a year ago, I would’ve said without question that you and Lilly were my best friends. You know who my best friend is now? Veronica. Because she stood by me. She didn’t blame me for something I had no control over. She was with my mother and me when the press was harassing us. She was the one that stuck by my side when this town judged me for my father’s actions.” He glared at Duncan. “Where were you?”
“At my sister’s side.”
“Yeah? So was Veronica.” Logan handed the towel back to the attendant, giving him a tip along the way. “She didn’t choose between her best friends.”
Duncan was left standing in the bathroom, staring at his own reflection.
--
Veronica sighed with her head resting against Logan’s shoulder, his arms wrapped around her waist as he slowly spun her around the dance floor. She looked up when he suddenly pulled away.
Cassidy had tapped Logan’s shoulder. “May I cut in?”
Logan smirked, but he relented. “I’m gonna get a drink.”
Veronica smiled as Cassidy took her hand and placed his free hand on her hip. They spun around the dance floor.
“Cassidy Casablancas,” she grinned, “where did you learn how to ballroom dance?”
“My mom used to take me to lessons. She said it was something everyone should learn.” He spun her away and then back again.
“You do it very well,” she laughed in delight as he dipped her. “Better than my dad.”
“You take lessons with your dad?”
She nodded, “He’s got the dancing part but not the dips and spins. Last time he tried to dip me, he dropped me.”
Cassidy laughed, “Maybe he did it on purpose.”
“Maybe.”
This time when he spun her away, Dick swooped in and stole her.
“Hey, Veronica,” the elder Casablancas greeted.
“Dick.”
“So, you and Logan?”
“Yes, Dick.”
“Finally.”
“What?” she asked in surprise.
“He’s been pussy-footing around for months.”
“Really.”
“I’m glad he finally stepped up.”
“Should you be telling me this?”
Dick shrugged.
At this point Duncan walked up to them. “Can I cut in?”
Dick sneered at him, “No.”
“Veronica?”
“Hello, rude much. We’re dancing here.”
Veronica sighed, not letting go of Dick. “What do you want, Duncan?”
“I’d like to talk to you in private.”
“I said everything that needed to be said already.”
“We can work everything out,” he said desperately.
“Work what out?” she asked, annoyed. “I don’t love you anymore.”
“You’re lying.”
“You’re right, I am.” Veronica took a breath. “I never loved you. What we had was silly infatuation. I was too innocent to know what love really is. Now, I know and what we had wasn’t it.”
“How can you say that?” he stared at her in pain.
“Because it’s the truth.” She looked at him without pity. “I tried to let you down easy, but you couldn’t just leave me alone.”
“It’s because of Logan, isn’t it?” he asked angrily. “He’s telling you to say these things.”
“Logan doesn’t tell me to do or say anything. I do have a mind of my own, you know.” Scoffing in disgust, she turned to Dick. “Let’s just go.”
Leading her off the dance floor, Dick handed her into Logan’s arms.
“Are you okay?” Logan asked, brushing her bangs from her forehead.
She nodded. “Can we leave? I’m not having fun anymore.”
Meg came up to them. “You can’t leave yet. You were both nominated for Homecoming King and Queen.”
“Wonderful.” Veronica dropped her forehead against Logan’s shoulder.
“Come on. Let’s go back to our table.” Logan took her hand. “He won’t bother you if I’m around.”
--
Lilly found her brother in the lobby. “What are you doing, Donut?”
He glared at her. “None of your business.”
“It is my business when you’re harassing my best friend.”
“I wasn’t harassing her.”
“I know for a fact that Veronica already told you that she wasn’t going to get back together with you.”
“I thought I could convince her,” he said petulantly. “We were good together.”
“You were boring together,” Lilly said bluntly. “You were disgustingly sweet together.”
“What’s wrong with that?”
“If you haven’t noticed, Veronica’s not the prude, little innocent anymore. She grew up. Have you seen her tonight? I couldn’t have convinced her to wear that a year ago and now she’s picking out her own sexy clothes. She’s blossomed… and I’m sorry to say, but the two of you don’t fit anymore.”
“But she and Logan do?” he sneered.
“I don’t know, but it will be interesting to find out.”
“I can’t believe you’re not mad that they’re together.”
“Veronica’s my best friend. I want her to be happy.”
“But with Logan?”
“Logan and I have been over for a long time. Well before Aaron bashed in my skull. If he’s happy with Veronica, which I think he is, I’m happy for him.”
“You’re not jealous?”
“No. I know Logan still cares about me. It’s why he waited so long before making a move.”
“He didn’t make the first move. Veronica did.”
Lilly smiled wryly, “My girl really has grown up.”
--
Seated in Logan’s lap, Veronica leaned her head back against his shoulder. “What’s for dessert?”
A smile spread across Logan’s lips. “You feel okay to eat dessert?”
“I’m always okay to eat dessert.” She reached over and fiddled with his tie.
“I think it’s a crepe.”
“With ice cream?”
“Yeah, with ice cream.” He nodded toward the waiters. “Look, there’s some kind of berry sauce and chocolate syrup.”
“Yum.” She looked up and watched with eager eyes as the waiters moved closer and closer. “Could you get me a drink?”
“If you’ll move from my lap.”
“But I’m comfortable here.”
“You can’t have it both ways,” he laughed.
She pouted at him. “Please?”
Logan looked around. “Luke, can you get me two cokes?”
She watched as Luke nodded and left the table. “You didn’t even have to say ‘please’.”
“It’s implied.”
“You should still say it.”
“Shouldn’t you be the one saying it? It’s your drink.”
“You ordered two.”
“One’s for Meg.”
The waiters finally made it to their table with dessert, so Veronica ignored him.
“You’re not going to share?” he asked.
“You have your own.” She pointed her fork at the plate on the table before continuing to savor the ice cream filled crepe from the plate in her hand.
“My hands are kind of full.” He demonstrated by pulling her tightly against him.
Pouting, she relented, feeding him a fork full of ice cream.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” she smiled, kissing his cheek before taking another bite of ice cream.
Luke returned passing the glasses to Logan, which he took with his free hand, setting one in front of Veronica and the other in front of Meg.
“Thank you,” the girls chimed in unison.
“Yeah, thanks, Luke.” Logan smirked up at him.
“Hey, where’s my dessert?” Luke looked down at the table.
Beaver and Dick instantly fingered each other, before complaining, “You ate half too!”
“Here, Luke, have Logan’s. We can share mine.” Veronica pushed the uneaten plate towards him.
Luke blushed before saying, “Thanks.”
“No problem,” Logan answered. He groaned, “How much longer do we have to wait for the homecoming announcement? I want to get out of here.”
“I think it’s now.” Veronica looked over his shoulder and saw Clemmons headed toward the mic.
The Vice Principal cleared his throat, “If you’ll all listen up, I’m about to announce the homecoming court.”
The chatter quickly ceased.
“Homecoming king of 2004 is” opening the envelope, he read, “Logan Echolls.”
Veronica giggled in delight as she kissed his cheek in congratulations before hopping off his lap. The guys slapped his back as he headed on stage to accept his crown.
“Congratulations, Mr. Echolls,” Clemmons said dryly as he handed Logan his crown. “Now stand over there, please.”
“What about my acceptance speech?” Logan asked in mock disappointment that he wouldn’t be able to make one.
“Over there,” Clemmons ordered. Seeing that Logan complied, he turned back to the audience. “Now, I’m pleased to announce that the Homecoming Queen of 2004 is… Lilly Kane.”
A murmur went through the crowd. This was unprecedented. The feuding pair of Neptune High was King and Queen of Homecoming. The crowd watched as Lilly gracefully went on stage to accept her crown.
Clemmons place the crown on her head, handing her a bouquet of flowers, all while gauging the chances that tonight would end in blood shed. He was Vice Principal, not stupid. He knew very well what had been going on in his school for the past year. Clearing his throat, he said, “Now if the Homecoming King and Queen will have their dance.” He stepped back and watched and waited with the rest of the crowd for impending doom.
Logan and Lilly approached each other hesitantly before they each shrugged and stepped into each other’s arms. They danced slowly, each waiting for the other to speak.
Lilly was the one to break the silence. “So, you and Veronica.”
He nodded, “Yeah.”
“That’s nice.”
“I’d have to agree.”
“You hurt her, I’ll castrate you,” she said pleasantly.
He smirked, “Anything to get near my dick, huh?”
She rolled her eyes. “If I wanted anywhere near your dick, I wouldn’t need a sharp implement.”
He snorted. “Not likely. No offence, but I don’t have sex with my father’s leftovers.”
“Are you sure about that? I’ve got some new tricks up my sleeves.”
“Don’t you mean between your knees?” Logan smiled coldly.
A grinned spread across her face. “I guess I’ll just have to teach Veronica everything I know.”
“I think I can handle that.”
“You think Veronica’s going to let you go where no man has gone before?” She narrowed her eyes at his confidence.
“Doesn’t matter. I’m just happy to be with her.”
“I have to congratulate her,” she smiled evilly, “she’s got you whipped and she hasn’t even put out yet.”
“What can I say? It’s easy to love someone who isn’t a coldhearted bitch.”
“Can’t day I didn’t warn you.” She shrugged off his insult.
At this point, other couples began to join the dancing. Everyone was dying to know what Logan and Lilly were saying to each other.
Lilly sighed, “I guess since Veronica has graciously decided to be your girlfriend, we should at least try to be civil when we’re in each other’s company.”
“I’m sure we won’t have to very often,” he smirked. “After all, we don’t share any friends.”
“Then it won’t be a hardship for either of us.”
“No, it won’t.”
They finished the rest of the dance in silence, parting ways the instant the music stopped.
Logan returned to the table and frowned at its occupants. “Where’s Veronica?”
“She and Meg went to the washroom,” Cassidy said helpfully.
Logan nodded, “I guess I’ll go get some fresh air.”
Luke, Dick and Cassidy joined him.
“You going to Pam’s after party?” Dick asked curiously.
“I have to get Veronica home by midnight,” Logan informed. “I might spend a couple hours with her and just call it a night. Pam’s is never that interesting anyway.”
Dick grinned, “Planning on getting lucky?”
Eyes narrowed, Logan resisted the urge to punch him. He was saved from having to ream him when Luke and Cassidy both punched him in the shoulders.
“Veronica’s not like that,” Cassidy glared.
“Don’t talk about her that way,” Luke added threateningly.
“Gees, take a chill pill,” Dick backed away. “I was joking around.”
“You shouldn’t joke about things like that.”
They reached the hallway just off the main lobby where the washrooms were. Lolling about for a while, Logan began to worry when Veronica still hadn’t come out. “Cassidy, go check the ballroom. Maybe we missed her.”
“I’ll go with him,” Luke volunteered.
Logan walked up to the Ladies’ room door and knocked, “Veronica? Meg? Are you in there?” He heard some muffled noises.
“What’s going on?” Lilly smirked. “Did you turn into a peeping Tom since the last time we spoke?”
“Can you go in there and see if Veronica and Meg are okay?” Logan asked.
“What’s going on?”
“Nothing. I’m just overreacting. Just go in there and check.”
Huffing, Lilly pushed into the restroom and was met by the sight of Veronica and Meg sitting patiently on a sofa, listening to Duncan ranting. “What the hell is going on here? Duncan, you do know this it the girls’ room, don’t you? And if I remember correctly, you have an extra appendage that makes you not a girl.”
With Lilly as a distraction, Veronica and Meg bolted.
Veronica ran straight into Logan’s arms. “Oh, thank god!”
He held her tight. “What happened?”
Seeing Veronica nuzzle further into Logan, Meg answered. “Duncan wouldn’t let us leave. He made us sit there and listen to him rant and rave about how Veronica and he were meant for each other. He even went so far as to insult you.”
Logan stiffened. “What did he say?”
“He mentioned some of the things you did while in Tijuana,” she said nervously. “The drinking, the whoring, the drugs. He also mentioned some of the things you’ve done here.”
“Like what?”
“You vandalized Pan High and the community pool… some smoke bombs,” Meg glanced at Veronica, “and that you used to spy on Lilly and Veronica changing.”
“Veronica?” Logan looked down at her, worried.
“Why won’t he leave me alone?” she mumbled. “Does he think he can make me hate you by telling me that stuff? I already knew about all of it.”
“Really?” he said in surprise. “You don’t mind?”
“You did some stupid things in the past. I’m not going to hold it against you.”
He sighed in relief.
“Of course if you do something stupid now, you’re totally in for it.”
“So what do you consider stupid?” Logan asked curiously. “Punching Duncan in the face when he finally comes out of that bathroom?”
“I’d rather we didn’t stick around for that.” Veronica nudged him toward the exit. “Do you mind if we just leave? I’ve had enough of Duncan for one night.”
Meg nodded her agreement.
“Alright,” he relented, “let’s get you ladies out of here.”
--
“So?” Logan wrapped an arm around Veronica’s shoulders. “Where to?”
She leaned against him in the back of his limo. “Is your mom home?”
“She’s away on a shoot. She’ll be back next week.”
“Then let’s go to your place.”
“Alright.” After giving directions to the driver, Logan grabbed hold of her hand. “So, did you have fun tonight?”
She smiled, “Everything was great… except for the parts that involved Duncan.”
“Forget about him. I won’t let him bother you again.”
“And how are you going to do that?” she laughed, “It’s not like you can follow me everywhere.”
“I could if you let me know where you’re going.”
“It’s sweet that you want to be with me twenty-four seven, but that’s not going to happen.”
“How are you going to stop me?”
“Are you entering crazy stalker territory? Because if you are, I so did not sign up for that. I may just have to dump you,” she teased.
“Then I’ll definitely be crazy stalker dude. I already warned you that you’re stuck with me now.”
“True.” She threw her arms around his neck, “I guess I’ll just have to keep you.” She kissed him sweetly.
Logan lowered her across the limo’s seats, covering her with his body. “I’m so glad I lied and told the guys I was taking you home.”
She hummed, “And I’m glad I phoned my dad and told him I’d be staying over at Meg’s.”
Their make out session was interrupted by the fact that the vehicle had rolled to a stop and the driver had come around to open the door for them.
Blushing, Veronica allowed Logan to help her out. “We should probably never do that again.” She buried her face against his shoulder in embarrassment.
“Don’t worry about George. He’s nothing if not discrete.”
“I’d still prefer not having your driver catch us making out in the backseat.”
