Oh man. Oh man. Ohmanohmanohmanohman....

I love Hot Shot as a song so fucking much. not only is there that irresistable latin dance beat, but the instrumentation! <3 Brass, timpani, electronic organ? And of course the percussion.
And then BEG goes SUITS UP including stealin' da wimminz! <3 <3 <3 Damn man, suits!BEG vamping it up on stage is even better than man!Yul, no joke. Although the effect is slightly lessened when their dance partners are taller than them. XD

Lol the retro elements to Sixth Sense are so good. The harmonic backing vocal fanfares, the string glissandos, and punctuating the fierce chorus with sassy note-sliding and SAXOPHONE ROFL. <3 ( ... )

Oh fuck, did you see Inkigayo Sixth Sense?!?! Narsha at 0:25 behind Gain like, totally had me grinning madly - so fierce this stage!!! (They did Hot Shot too but I liked the MuCore one better - I still want those suits!). Oh man, I f-ing love these performances, omg....

Also, my sister said that the "Love is just a game" sounds like Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge XD The engrish makes me giggle a lil ("hit that high" sounds like "hit that thigh" xP), but I'm usually too busy gawking and squeeing. Btw, the way Miryo delivers that "gratzi" is so cool XD

Watching this, I would have ranked them above 2NE1 in that performance ranking.
2NE1 does do well with the performance, but I think BEG is better in just the full package. I mean, yeah, they use back up dancers, but they use them so fucking well. It's a full show and it's amazing and bad ass and I agree, it's presence and also the talent that just explodes on stage XD

I also like your explanation of their solo work and how they've come back together, even more unified.

Yeah, it did sound like they were straining at the end :/ Shostakovich! Whoaaaaaaaa~

*snorts* But I'd bet that BEG would make "get into my core" sound awesome somehow.

Whoa, I already forgot about the 2009 daejuns ... I do remember their Sign performance though, all gothic-like.

At the point which SNSD doesn't have a distinct vocal dynamic in the first place
Would it be even possible for SNSD to do this? And how?

Starx3 shows some directions they could go. Sunny doing the higher pitched falsetto parts, (seriously, SM, make her into the Julie Andrews already!) as well as having Yuri go with her deep voice ( ... )

What's the Shostakovich influence?

I don't listen to that much Shostakovich(too depressing for me), but I'm guessing his influence is primarily in how harsh Sixth Sense is played/performed.

I loves me some Shostakovich but have never listened to the Leningrad Symphony.
I assume it's just some namedropping on the PR branch of their company's part.

I'm really torn when it comes to Sixth Sense. The attitude of that opening, the lyrics, the production, the structure--everything is wonderful.

And then we hit the choreography for the chorus. The back-up dancers are really making this piece work on stage, but the melody of Jea's opening line of the chorus is weakened by the choreo that the girls+dancers are given for those lines. It looks kind of like flail-y locking to me, and it doesn't match the intensity of the song. I'm all ready for my musical climax, and then I look at the choreo during the opening lines of every chorus, and kind of lose my mojo a little, because it's not matching the music in intensity and it's not pushing the song/staging enough, for me. :(

And it's only the choreo for the opening lines of every chorus that gets to me! The choreo for everything else looks great! Arrrrrrgh.
