Nippon banzai!*

I'm so behind on news, but I was talking to CP and I have some simple questions. "Genie," as much as I love it, is an interesting choice to port over to the Japanese market. I mean, this single was SNSD's leap into the "mature" image, the contrast they deliberately provided against their super power sugar pop hit "Love Machine""Gee," which was so ( Read more... )

I believe that Genie is the song most well-known by Japan. In most of the videos in Japan about SNSD that have popped up so far they use Genie clips, although the dancedub troupe that came in did Oh!. Gee got SNSD into the spotlight in Korea, but because they built on their popularity(and possibly peaked after) with Genie it's the one that Japan took note of ( ... )

"Gee" definitely did filter into Japan all under-the-radar-like since so many girls were using it as an audition song and making producers go, "WTF?" The polish of the "Gee" MV coupled with its maddening hookiness helped put SNSD on the musical map of many countries, I think. "Genie" was a brilliant follow up in that I think it did pull in people who were skeptical or disaffected by "Gee"--the "Gee" fans who may not haved liked "Genie" stuck around out of instilled loyalty while people who didn't like "Gee" were like, "Hey, what a second . . ." For someone like me who liked both, "Genie" cemented my interest in the group since I liked the song so damn much. Still do.

SNSD's "Girlfriend" totally hits on my love of 80s and anime pop music. <3 ( ... )

The audition thing though was UFA doing auditions in Korea.

Re Girlfriend: this video still makes me smile, even if Hercules was riffing off of 60s not 80s. And though I ranted about how Kpop is less melodic, usually SM is more Jpopish in that respect, probably stemming from all of their experience shilling BoA and DBSK ( ... )

So you missed the lezbo kissing?

Makes you sympathize with japanese girls longing for girl group alternatives!

I love Perfume's music. "Natural Beauty" is quite insanely poppin' and crackin'. I like how they sound like they did in their early independent days but are among the biggest groups now. And pop artists who consistently work with one producer are almost always better off!

I saw the screencap of the catgirl kiss. There's also like a food bukkake face shot. And we all thought Because Of You was being unsubtle.
Besides, it's not like H!P hasn't done those fetishes before. They've done bunny girls, lesbian kiss, bikini video, and rolling around on velvet before. But not all in the same video at once. And no underage girls sharing the bathtub either.

What do you mean by girl group alternatives? There's SCANDAL, dream, and BRIGHT. On the innocent side, you have Tokyo Girls Style and Momoiro Clover who are squeaky clean. And hey, them AKB48 sub-groups ain't bad at all.

I can take Perfume in controlled amounts, usually more if I intersperse them with Capsule. Nakata is amazing.

It depends on the producer. JYP recycles the same damn melodic progression for EVERY SONG nowadays, and the SM groups have benefitted from playing with a wide variety.

Agree about Natural Beauty though! Throwback to 80s style too!

If you had to close Heavy Rotation, it must've been really extreme! D:

Oh my lord. I was doing all good with the vids and then you threw in that AKB 48 porn-esque vid and now I'm disturbed! lol

But I did really like the MM Shouganai Yume Oibito video. Reminds me a little bit of Baby Baby SNSD. But I notice they don't switch places much in the choreo. Or at least it doesn't feel like it. Anyway I watched a live performance of that song after and they shorten it considerably. But they seem to perform well. Then I checked out another vid from them called 'Nanchatte Renai' and I really like that one. The outfits and the mood of the song is different from what I have seen from them.

Even AKB48 fans are being divided over that video. I was disturbed by that shit!

Lol, I didn't expect you to watch their other videos. But yeah, MM covers an extremely wide variety of styles because they've been around for so long. This "EmoMusume" image of theirs is a recent development though, their trademark has always been their super happy songs. If you liked it I'd recommend their Platinum 9 Disco and Single Daizenshuu concerts as they best feature the more performance-driven MM whereas the live you watched was likely from an all-H!P concert so the energy level isn't as intense.
I've never noticed how much SYO's dance is static, but that wasn't always the case.

Does AKB48 have a major fansite? Or is there anywhere where I can read up on what fans think of them and their music/concepts or whatever? Same for MM. I need to get to know my jpop girl groups and what the fandom is like.

The live that I watched seemed like it was from something like a Music Bank or something of the sort. Here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QXg2eOuty4

But that AKB48 video does seem quite disturbing. I watched it from beginning to end! I mean you can't push it much farther than that can you? lol They're already doing the bikini thing in the Ponytail PV (yes, I just sat through that too! Damn you for mentioning!)

Stage48 is like the SSF of AKB48. The other big AKB48 forum is Nihongogo and that has the more extreme fans, in that they're both more pervvy and intellectual. Like OMNTD but more malicious-sounding, don't take their more inflammatory statements seriously ( ... )
