The bizarre thing is that for most of the girls, the reveals seemed okay. The only one I've read any big blowup for is Taeyeon. On the one hand, her boyfriend is a member of a relatively young group, so the fangirls of said boy would have more influence over his career, but the backlash against Taeyeon from self-proclaimed SNSD fans was ridiculously harsh and entitled. I thought Jessica, Tiffany, or Yoona would have inspired devotion more like that of Jpop idols', but I guess Taeyeon's overwhelming popularity relative to the other members isn't primarily mainstream.
There's been a shift in the music industry overall, even internationally, to enable old groups to reunite on the backs of a core devoted fanbase, so it's not so surprising that the likes of Shinhwa can actually be financially viable, or in this case, that SNSD appear to be moving into the "srs arteest" phase of their career, but that their core fanbase is still operating off of an idol paradigm. Unlike, say, Lady Gaga, whose artistic aesthetic fostered a fanbase that would celebrate her independence, SM built SNSD from the ground up to cultivate the strongest fervor through idol appeal tactics. The members were all indoctrinated on using such strategies to build their popularity. And even as the members would like to move on to the next phase of their career, they recognize the value of fans who will support even the laziest of releases and shittiest of artistic mistakes so they won't let that rare commodity of stability go. Sunny, even more so than the others, due to her family.
