Despite the snide remarks of my friends, I went to watch March of the Penguins this afternoon. Actually, it is probably a good thing that nobody wanted to watch it with me, because they would have had to endure my "omg penguins SQUEEE!" afterward. I ended up sitting next to two amusing older women. They were rather scandalized by the mating scenes: "I though this movie was rated G!" Note to self: if I ever make a film, I'll be sure to put a penguin sex warning on it.
A while ago my sister and I were discussing the "baaaby animals!!" phenomenon -- that is, the fact that anything that is tiny or a baby is automatically adorable. As soon as the baby penguins were on screen, a giant "Awww!" passed through pretty much the entire audience. What exactly is it about little animals that makes them so cute? For a lot of people, this even extends beyond babies; when I was talking to my sister, I pointed out that a lot of people think that tiny Coke cans are cute, and that iPod minis are cute. Why?! I don't mean this in a condescending way, because I too find pretty much everything tiny to be cute, but I just don't understand it.
