LiveJournal the product is owned by a company in Russia. Right now, America is imposing a litany of sanctions against Russia due to their invasion of Ukraine which is a major current event happening in the world right now. I have been worried for months that LiveJournal's operators will cease offering LiveJournal to Americans and lock us out of the site. As I've got twenty years of personal history here, I attempted to pull all those entries down to archive them in the possibility that my fears would come true. While I tried downloading my data, LJ saw it as weird behavior on their site and locked out my IP for a couple weeks. I had a short back-and-forth with their IT team to get my access reinstated, but it's clear to me that even without the situation in Ukraine, I can't rely on the stability of LiveJournal for much longer. I need a new host.
In the coming weeks to months, I'll be transitioning my life's story away from LJ and onto a different more trustworthy platform. This is a sad day for me as I've got a financial investment in LJ as a "Permanent Account" holder. I rarely put money into anything online but I put money into LJ and was planning on using this benefit for years yet to come. Unfortunately, the instability in both Russia and the slow death of LJ have forced my consideration of other platforms. I believe that downloading my entries en masse should not be considered bad behavior and any platform that treats paying customers in such a way is loosing out. I've had friends come and go on LJ for decades and it's sad to note that I'm the very last one I know still actively using the platform. That is pretty telling as to the quality and longevity of this site. Time to pack up and leave. More on that as the time comes.
So COVID is really on its way out. It's still considered a global pandemic but cases in America are so low that my workplace has finally decided to force my team back into the office after two whole years of working remote. It's currently scheduled for two weeks into April which is right around the corner. Half my team doesn't have cubes to work in so we'll see how that goes...
In February, I was notified that I was being transferred to a new team being set up under the IT department within my corporation. At the time, I was told it was just going to be me and another team member but we've since learned that it's going to be my ENTIRE team except our faithful boss who's been with us through thick and thin for more than three years. While I'm relieved that my entire team is staying together and not being split up, I share with the rest of the team in the devastation that we're losing our boss. Great bosses don't come along often and it seems insane not to bring him along but we have no control. We've talked and talked about it and we know that the best thing for our long term prospects is to be moved to the safety and security of this IT department. The other weird thing is that we have to wait. There's a tentative timetable but no one believes it'll be adhered to because this seems greatly disorganized. We still don't know many details about the move or what will be expected of us and it's supposedly happening at the end of the month. So yea, it's going to be a few months of wild turmoil and being thrown into the unknown.
