2021 Year in Review

Jan 09, 2022 20:54

Well 2021 was kind of more of the same of 2020. Here's the summary:

January was our first real month in our new house where we weren't wall-to-wall renovating 24/7. In February, the weight of responsibility of the house got to us and caused despair. Things got better in March as rooms took shape including my very own home office.

April saw us finally meet all the neighbors of which there's five sets here! In May, we replaced the property's aging chain-link fence with a wooden one all by ourselves. June began a wave of vacations with a trip to see friends in Montana.

July was the closest I've been to telecommuting being rescinded but the Coronavirus came on strong again and cancelled those plans. In August, Nicole and I took a major family vacation with her immediate family to an island in Washington that went very well! In September I turned 40 and became a real engineer!

In October Nicole and I took a trip for our anniversary for the first time in years. November had us in California for Thanksgiving. And lastly in December I finally began talking to my mom again after more than two years of estrangement.

2021 seemed like a good year for Nicole and me even with the pandemic continuing. It was a year of crazy growth being our first full year in our first real house plus all the built-in responsibility that comes with it. Professionally, the entire year was spent telecommuting in addition to the nine months we did it in 2020. I continued to be able to learn cool programming languages and further my career as a programmer, becoming a legitimate engineer both in title and efforts. As the Coronavirus continues to do weird things into 2022, it's likely I'll continue to telecommute for months to come.

Expectations for 2022:
  • The sale of family land in North Dakota continues, with the largest single payout happening in just a matter of weeks.
  • I believe telecommuting will continue for months to come but it's literally anyone's guess when it will end. My boss is trying to make it permanent but it's up to people far above him so we'll see how that goes.
  • Being successful homeowners continues! I expect there'll be more home improvement projects but they'll be less emergencies and far less interesting that what we saw in the past.
  • Things are going well patching things up with my mom and I hope things get back to "normal" this year and that we can put all this lost time behind us.
  • More big decisions continue to be on the horizon: Do we have children? Do we get a second dog? Do we move again?
  • I said the same thing this time last year but I hope that one year from now, the pandemic will be over in one form or another and that things will be closer to the normal that we've all forgotten about from early 2020.
There's so much to pack into these short entries that sometimes it feels funny to try to summarize an entire year like this. There's so many little things and hobbies and good times and bad times that can't make it into these posts, but that's okay. It's the big things that help me remember the little things, too. So here's to 2022! May it not suck!
