The Move Gears Up / Back on the Farm

I've been here in Boise with Jaci for three whole weeks now, and as the time goes by, the leave date for both of us draws ever closer. Cleaning out the house has really kicked into overdrive and you can now see the progress here and there. There's now only a couple pieces of furniture that have yet to go to their final destinations and plans for Jaci's trip to South Dakota with her father are nearly final. Even though we're about to go our separate ways once more, we are finding time to have fun and enjoy the things we like about Boise. Namely, the dollar cinemas that dot the area. A couple nights ago, we caught an evening showing of How to Train your Dragon and it was the craziest thing ever. The movie was okay, but the experience was unique. The theater was so packed, Jaci and I nearly had to sit apart. It was humid from all the people with their children in tow but what was really fascinating was the noise of people with their snacks. The theater we went to gives out popcorn with tickets, so everyone had a sack of it. For the first twenty minutes of the film, at quiet moments, you could hear the rustling and crunching of 150 people snacking away at their buttery, salty treats. It was something else. It's hard to get annoyed at anything at a movie I paid one dollar to get into, so listening to the people was fun.

So it's looking like I'll stick around in Boise an extra three days. I was originally planning on leaving on Monday the 21st, but this final weekend is going to be so stuffed with obligations that it would make a hasty Monday morning goodbye seem insensitive and unfair. For the last week and until Sunday night, we're once again farm-sitting for one of Jaci's friends. This is the same farm that's home to four goats, two cattle, two horses, five chickens, three dogs and five cats. It's even comically complete with goofy neighbors, a dopey ranch hand and a pesky fox who attempts, each morning and thankfully unsuccessfully, to steal chickens. Our schedule has us there every six hours for sometimes several hours at a time. I should have brought more than three pairs of jeans.

To say that our obligations on the farm are taking a toll would be appropriate. The animals, especially the house pets, are undergoing separation anxiety and nearly every time we show up, something new has been destroyed. Typically it's blankets and rugs, but it's escalated to books and even plastic medicine jars. One day we showed up and a cat bed had been ripped to shreds. Styrofoam everywhere. Yesterday, a bed had been de-sheeted and all the blankets had been urinated on, which is the first time that's happened in the entire time we've been watching the farm. It's been a struggle and has left barely any time for us to relax. Jaci's friends and her father also command time. Plus, Jaci had a court date with her creditors over her bankruptcy this morning that was thankfully dismissed.

With all this happening plus the monumental struggle to clean this house out, leaving Monday, the day after we are finished with the farm, would be a disappointing way to leave things and say goodbye. Monday will be the very first day where both of us will be finally free of obligation. It wouldn't be fair to have the last memories of our time in Boise be that of cleaning up after 21 antsy farm animals between trying to clean this house out. So Jaci suggested I stay a few more days so that we can finally be lazy together one last time and I've agreed. We're looking forward to maybe getting out to see Toy Story 3 or maybe have lunch at this pizza place we love one last time. It'll finally be the "goodbye" we've been meaning to have since I got here. It's literally been non-stop work for three solid weeks and when I look around here, it barely looks like anything's gotten done and now it seems like everything came crashing down on top of this one weekend and, "Ohh, sorry Jaci, I'm leaving Monday, the first day you've been able to sleep-in in several weeks." It's simply not right, so I'll stay a little longer. Deal with it!
