Last night, Leann and I had another date, but this one was another casual stay-in movie night. After a bite at Chipotle, we escaped back to her apartment. I met her roommate and another friend before we hid in her room to watch stupid movies. The place has no air conditioning, and even with three fans, we were sweltering. I'm totally done with this for-the-ages heat wave. It's supposed to get up to 90 again today, which would make it like the 10th day in a row at or above 90. I can't take it anymore. I had some Hershey chocolate bars with me and by the time I left last night, they were liquid in the package. That's how hot it was over there.
We didn't really watch much of the movies we'd had. Just like our first date a week ago, we were too busy getting to know each other as we did a world of talking and storytelling about past loves and how we'd like the future to be. We even told each other some embarrassing stories and came clean about some playful deep dark secrets. To my great amazement, as I continue to reveal to Leann what I consider negative aspects of myself and my personality, she simply endears herself closer to me. It's as if she totally relates to everything about me. It's only been two weeks since her and I started talking online after being matched through my college friend, but it already seems like we're fast friends. We could be an official item here very quickly.
So the garage sale is over. My father and I were out there selling stuff from our garage for three days this weekend and I think everyone considers it a rousing success. It was supposed to be a block-sale involving as many people on our street as wanted to participate, but out of the 30-or-so homes on the block, only three or four participated on Friday. It only got worse as the weekend went on, as on Saturday, it was only us and the originators of the sale. On Sunday, it was literally just us the entire day. So much for the neighborhood block sale of Summer 2009!
But hey, their loss. A lot of advertising by the originators of the sale went into this, and when everyone bailed, that just meant that we got more business. In fact, by the time we officially closed up shop at 3 PM on Sunday, we'd cleared nearly $900 in business. I personally moved about $80-$90 worth of consumer electronics and gadgets that had previously just been collecting dust in my room. My dad considers it so much of a success that he's already thinking of having another garage sale in two weeks.
It was a fun three days of people watching. Having a garage sale is kinda wild. People come in waves. It's an interesting phenomena. Friday was our busiest day by far. Saturday was busy too, but Sunday was virtually dead. We still managed to make money yesterday, so it was a good thing we were open, but wow was it dead. We got rid of a whole bunch of stuff, too, which everyone is happy about. Lots of large lawn furniture and even a giant home gym. I got rid of a couple computers and some board games. It was really cool. Now my folks are wandering the house, looking for things to populate a second garage sale in two weeks time. We'll see what happens. I just hope this whole experience teaches my folks to stop buying so much stuff they never use. We're happy with what we sold, but it's kind of sad to sell something at $20 that you paid $60 for in the first place and never really used. But hopefully this will be a learning experience for everyone that, when you buy something, you'd better mean it and also consider the end result.
