Sister Moving to Detroit?

For a year, my sister's live-in-boyfriend of about ten whole years, Franko, has known that his job was about to end. He works for a customer support call center helping people with issues with their General Motors vehicles. The place employed hundreds. Last year, the company decided to move the operation to other countries in order to cut costs and pay less for labor. Everyone was told that the local call center would close but they were never definite about an exact date.

Finally, about a month ago, they officially came out and said that the center would close at the end of August. It was kind of funny, finally knowing exactly when it would all end. Franko had the next 6 months all planned out and decided to take it easy and take the rest of the year off. But then something crazy happened.

The same company has an operation in Detroit, Michigan, and decided to allow interviews to fill two positions there from whomever here wanted to apply. Franko decided to apply just for kicks but came home after the interview disappointed as he believed he'd botched the interview. Then, out of the blue on Friday, they called him up and said that he would be offered the job in Detroit! Out of all the people who applied, he got one of the two offers. On Monday, when the company tells him how much the Detroit job will pay, he'll make a decision then on accepting it or not.

Pros: Franko will continue to be employed, Val will get out of her soul-crushing job at CCA and moving to Detroit could be an adventure. Cons: It's Detroit, Franko is looking at a cut in pay if he takes the job, there's no moving bonus so it'll be out of pocket, Val will be unemployed and they don't know a soul in Detroit. Plus, it'll be kinda sad for my parents and I if they leave. It's been nice having them only a couple miles down the street. So yea, I have some purely selfish reasons for hoping they stick around, but all things must change. If they do move, it'll be quite a jolt to the family. With Ryan in North Dakota and Val in Michigan, I'll be the only one left. I think deep down, one of the reasons I'm reluctant to look for jobs outside of Portland is that I don't want my parents to be completely alone.

We'll know more on Monday when they tell him just how much less he stands to make if he does in fact take the job. I'm already shocked that they offered him the job after he botched the interview, but I'd be even more shocked if he actually took the job. To uproot Val so drastically and move 2,000 miles east at their own expense to take a lower-paying job in a strange city seems counter productive. I understand that people take jobs and move around the country all the time, it just sucks that it's so out-of-the-blue like this. To think, in a little under two months, I don't know when I'll see them again and I'll be here alone with my parents. How odd.
