I think that, historically speaking, the zombie pirates put it pretty firmly in the realm of AU. Although, speaking of corsets, mine is incredibly comfortable and lovely to wear, and yet I really almost fainted at G-A-Y just because it was hot in there and I wasn't used to wearing one and breathing properly in it.
I know, it's not like I haven't considered the zombies and other supernatural stuff. I just hoped that if they're going to make a plot point of a historical thing, they'd actually get it right...
...and furthermore, it's presented as The Sort Of Thing Women In The Olden Days Had To Endure, so that's why it stands out. It's a proper plot device in its own right. It's so damn ironic that they chose a late 1700's corset when a late 1600's one would not only have been historically accurate but plausible for the fainting stuff as well. Anything from the 1660s to the 1750s would've done. I bet in three hundred years' time they'll consider current bras as faint-inducing contraptions as well.
