Heh, I thought that episode was a bit weak, but for some reason, I haven't really been that pissed off at all the backreferences. After years of Rusty yelling that Ten and Rose were the only proper Doctor and companion ever, it's sorely needed. I'm so happy for all the kids who have all these old stories to discover. In fact, I'm jealous of them because they get to see these things for the first time:)!
Also, I really, really, really love how S5 went out of its way to show that look, there really have been other Doctors and companions and stuff.
I do like that, myself. As I think I've said before, the feeling I get is that RTD liked to tell us how wonderful he thought Doctor Who was, and Moffat likes to show us.
Yeah, that's it in a nutshell. We get much more showing these days and whenever the Doctor tries to boast, he falls on his arse. Which is so, so oldschool. It reminds me of Four being grumpy and boasty and then being completely, hopelessly pwned by Romana:).

WORD. Matt Smith stepping through the projected montage of Doctors in his debut was EPIC. All hail the Moff!

Amy: Ooh! Gandolf!
I also love that she wanted to see his previous companions, but didn't get wrapped up in being jealous, the way Rusty wrote his companions.
