Writing Updates: Pretentious (28) - Rated T For Turks

I got my writing assignment topic picked! Renewable energy and Solar panels, as it’s something I can actually research in town. Haha. Yay for the base using solar energy when they can~! Unfortunately I still need to come up with a thesis so it’s going to be a couple of days before I can turn it in. Need to do some preliminary research and see what I’m going to be researching. Although the sooner I get it done the better as the instructor provides extra credit for turning it in early! Which I like. So we can get more than 100%. But it also means I can write it and get it out of the way. It’s not due until the week of July 26- August 1. I have plenty of time and hope to tackle it next weekend or the weekend after.

Frankenstein: The Prodigal Son
Dean Koontz
Start: June 4, 2010
Finish: June 5, 2010

97 chapters, 410+ pages, I don’t recall the exact number, two days. Chose to read instead of game. Koontz’s work is really easy to read.

I get annoyed when people cross Greek gods with Roman ones, which happened. It’s really something that just irks me off. I know how similar they are, but, I’d be happy if people could pick ONE and stick with it. I’m probably being overly critical but it does take out some of the enjoyment for me. It really does.

On to the story, overall it really was pretty good. I liked the new spin on Frankenstein! I’m ecstatic to see someone else paint Victor as a terrible monster of a man and Deucalion (the name the creature picked for himself) as a product of circumstance. I liked the relationship portrayed between the two. In fact I’m downright happy because the relationship is more akin to that of Mary Shelly’s, only Victor really shows he is a cruel and sadistic bastard. He’s power tripping. I just really enjoyed it because of that aspect, it really did tie into Shelly’s Frankenstein. One thing I didn’t like was the chapter character perspective change. I’m thankful I remember pretty much everything if I’ve read it, however, I feel it makes the book troublesome to read. It goes through a chapter for Deucalion, then Carson, then Roy, then Carson and Michael, then Victor, then Randal Six, then Carson, then Victor, then Deucalion, then Randal…etc. So it gets to the point, I was like “ARGH! Too many characters!!” Up until the end, there were very few continuous chapters with people (if any). The last four or five chapters are all Carson, Michael, and Deucalion.

On another upside Jonathon Harker makes an appearance. This cracks me up, but also upsets me a little, since I’ve read Stoker’s Dracula. Ah, what else? Oh Michael made several movie references. He made me laugh a lot too. I also really liked Randall Six. His name makes sense in context of the book, but, I’m not going to spoil that. Mostly I’m just happy to see Deucalion, because I’ve always thought he was very cool. :D Of course he’s different than in Shelly’s Frankenstein. I just think he’s a cool character in this one too.

All in all, glad I read it. Annoyed I don’t have book two.
