So I definitely have to start working on a new tutorial list since I start school next week! yikes!! anywho for now here's another coloring tutorial for you guys
And I know I usually name my tutorials after the end coloring result but the end result came out different for every single example to I'm just naming it after the show haha.
From:
To This:
.:Program:. PS CS2
.:Includes:. Curves, Selective Coloring, Levels
.:Translatable?:. No because of the Selective Coloring
.:Other Examples:.
*PSD included*
1:. Starting off like always I took
this promo picture of Blake Lively as Serena in Gossip Girl from episode 10 season 2 "Bonfire of the Vanity". (I got the picture from
andreas ....the promo pictures are f-locked btw) Then I cropped it as usual but I didn't sharpen it since I always leave the sharpening until the end when I'm done.
2:. My image is already light but I decided to still add a Curves Layer (Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Curves) to lighten it up just a bit. If you're familiar with some of my tutorial you'd know that I use this as alternate method of Screening a copy of the base picture since sometimes Screening too much can make the image grainy but you do what ever you do to lighten up an image.
RBG:
Input: 64
Output: 71
3:. I felt that her sin tone color was a little too yellow so I added a Selective Coloring (Layer>New Adjustments>Selective Coloring) to mess with her skin tone color.
Reds: -100, 0, +100, 0
Yellows: +100, 0, -38, 0
4:. Then I added yet another Selective Coloring layer to enhance the coloring of the whole icon basically.
Reds: -32, 0, +33, 0
Yellows: -31, 0, +17, 0
Whites: -35, -29, -100, -39
Neutrals: +47, +2, -4, -4
5:. After this I felt that the colors contrasted too much, like the dark didn't seem dark and the light didn't seem light so I decided to add a Levels Layer (Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels) and messed around with the settings.
RBG:
Input Levels: 11, 1.14, 255
Output Levels: 0, 255
RED:
Input Levels: 12, 1.08, 254
Output Levels: 6, 251
GREEN:
Input Levels: 0, 1.09, 255
Output Levels: 0, 255
BLUE:
Input Levels: 0, 1.10, 255
Output Levels: 0, 235
6:. For my final coloring step I felt that the icon was a little too light and to blueish so I added another Selective Coloring layer to the icon.
Reds: -16, 0, +74, 0
Yellows: -42, 0, +22, 0
Blacks: 0, 0, +15, 0
7:. And that's it!! After this I sharpened the image because I was satisfied with the result. I sharpened it by doing a Smart Sharpen (Filter>Sharpen>Smart Sharpen) and setting the Amount % to around 20. Also after this you can add whatever textures and text you'd like to add to your icon. I had textures on all the original icons (including the additional examples below) but it'd be a hassle to post them since I can't really remember how they look like haha.
