Sounds like stubbornness. If your battles always ended in a tie, especially how long they've fought, they can't just accept they are both strong warriors?

I suppose being able to freely travel to different towns can be interesting. Your story reminds me of a city back home built on warriors who come to fight and prove themselves.
Nordopolica. It was once a city where spectators came and watched prisoners from the Empire fight against one another. Of course, those times have long passed and the Coliseum has been open to any and all who wish for a challenge for years now.
