Harry eyed the painting nervously. He'd cast the monitoring spell without know if it would work, but he needed some way to tell when Severus left for work.
As if he knew that Harry wanted him gone, Severus lollygagged, dallying over the herb-pots on the kitchen window-ledge and fiddling with the simmering cauldron on the counter, which did not really need his attention.
Would the man never leave?
As soon as the painting showed Severus going through the Floo, Harry was out of his office, Apparating home, bags of decorations in hand.
He had a surprise party to prepare for.

Severus Snape was content. If anyone had asked ten years before, he'd have said he never expected to reach his fiftieth year, a milestone in most wizards' lives.
But now… life was good.
Thinking of Harry, he smiled. Perhaps he would suggest that they celebrate his birthday tonight. Since Albus's death, Severus rarely even noted the day's passing; he hadn't even mentioned the date to Harry. But he was sure the brat would want to mark the occasion.
He hurriedly locked the shop's door and Floo'd home.
A flash of light and an explosion of noise greeted his arrival.
"Surprise!"
