Played this over at seaislewitch's LJ and totally stole it from her. I hope she doesn't mind, but it was hard to pass up. **lurves her**With a single line of prose, rock bands became icons. Guess the classic song and the band. In addition, just like QI, tell me something interesting about the song/artist or tell me an interesting anecdote about the song ( Read more... )

It does, doesn't it? Didn't think about that.

I adore Queen. Absolutely adore. With a capital "A."

They are rather fabulous.

Did you see the musical "We Will Rock You"? Tenuous plotline held together with Queen songs in some wonderful arrangements. Good times!

Mark loves them. He loves a lot of classic rock. It's good at parties.

I haven't seen the musical, probably for the same reason that I voluntarily avoid listening to Paul Rodgers sing lead with Roger Taylor and Brian May. Guess I sound a bit "pureblooded" when it comes to stuff like that. Sigh. Which isn't to say there aren't some good covers done ... there are. But there's just something speacial about the original.

I'm a bit of a purist, too... But as a singer, I REALLY appreciate that there are now versions of some of my favourite songs arranged for female voice. I've got some GREAT backings. :D

Oh, you definitely have a point. And I don't mean it to sound like I never listen to cover bands or anything ... on the contrary. I think it depends on the song. Some songs are so good that they stand alone -- they become "standards" that anybody can do and do well (for example: Queen's "Somebody to Love" done by Anne Hathaway in Ella Enchanted). But there are some songs that are just so easily identified with the original band that doing a cover of them seems almost sacriligious.

Of course, something I dislike even more than that is when a band allows their song to become a product jingle. I was horrified the day I put on one of my Aerosmith albums and my youngest said, "Oh, that's the song from the car commercial!" And Natasha Beddingfield's "Unwritten" is now selling shampoo. NOt cool.

I love that version - she does a great job!

A lot of people have covered Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. Someone I know has 52 versions of it.

Yeah, songs that are already released being used for ads annoys the crap out of me, too. Like, for years, the Kmart ad here was The Swingers' Counting The Beat. Now I can't hear it without having visions of adorable kids doing catalogue poses and chasing a ball around.
