Two questions for writers types:

When you edit something, do you retype the whole thing or do you just go back and correct your typos/punctuation/whatever? Does it depend on if you're writing fiction or nonfiction (such as an essay for school)? Do you do it for some drafts but not others?

If you write both short stories and long stories, how do you tell which a particular story is going to be? Do you just know? Do you have to make a decision? I know some writers have written novels based on short stories, but I'm not sure if this is a common thing or not.

Just curious!
